How do you project a round Earth onto a flat map and be able to define locations on the map? This is a complex question, and there are multiple ways of doing this.
One method is the Military Grid Reference System (MGRS). As you can probably guess, this is used by the military, standardized and maintained by NATO. It is similar to GEOREF in that it is a shortened, encoded form of coordinates, and similar to UTM in that it divides the Earth into zones. In addition to alphanumeric zones, the zones are subdivided into sub-zones, also with alphanumeric values. Locations within each sub-zone are identified with an easting and northing, in meters, from the southwest corner of the sub-grid. Due to the subdividing, it is usually used for geoposition over relatively small pieces of the earth.
