E: The railroad from Torre da Gadanha to Montemor-o-Novo was
abandoned more than 10 years ago. Far from busy roads, the old
track crosses a very beautiful part of the country, with lots of
different trees and birds and roaming herds of cows and sheep.
The track is about 12 Kms long, so bring plenty of water and
maybe something to eat. It's is also possible to take a shortcut to
the cache from the old train station of Paião (from there its just
a 1 Km walk). To get to the Paião train station, follow the road
from Montemor-o-Novo to Alcácer do Sal and turn left at the "Paião"
sign.
Crossing the track there are several wire fences. These
shouldn't be there, as the track still belongs to the railroad
company (CP). The fences are not difficult to pass. If you find any
gates, please leave them as you found them (open or closed).
About 2 Km from Montemor-o-Novo, the track is impassable due to
the very dense bushes. the only way I know of continuing is to go
back about 200m, and heading west through an old gate (just two
cement posts). About 200m along the path there is a dirt road. Turn
left and then right as you reach the asphalt road. Turn right again
at the crossroads, and then just follow the arrows to
Montemor-o-Novo. I will try to find a shorter detour, so that it is
possible to return to the track and cross the old railroad bridge.
I will then update the cache description.
In Montemor-o-Novo it's possible to take a taxi from the main
square (just follow the arrows with "CENTRO"). It cost me 8 € to
return to Torre da Gadanha.

P: O caminho de ferro de Torre da Gadanha até
Montemor-o-Novo foi abandonado há mais de 10 anos. Longe das
estradas movimentadas, o velho caminho atravessa uma paisagem muito
bonita, com muita variedade de árvores e pássaros, manadas e
rebanhos.
O percurso tem cerca de 12 Km, pelo que convém levar bastante
água e alguma comida. É possível usar um atalho, a partir do
apeadeiro de Paião (desse ponto é só 1 Km). Para chegar ao
apeadeiro de Paião siga a seta respectiva na estrada de
Montemor-o-Novo para Alcácer do Sal.
Ao longo do percurso há várias vedações de arame colocadas
abusivamente, já que os terrenos ainda pertencem à CP. As vedações
não são difíceis de ultrapassar. Se encontrar cancelas, deixe-as
como as encontrou.
A cerca de 2 Km de Montemor-o-Novo, o caminho está intransitável
por causa da espessa vegetação. A única saida que conheço obriga a
retroceder cerca de 200m. Nesse ponto, siga para Oeste através do
portão (dois postes de cimento). O caminho que aí começa tem cerca
de 200m e termina numa estrada de macadame. Siga à esquerda e
depois à direita, quando chegar à estrada de asfalto. Vire de novo
à direita no cruzamento e siga as setas para Montemor-o-Novo.
Tentarei encontrar um desvio melhor, que permita voltar ao caminho
de ferro e atravessar a antiga ponte ferroviária.
Em Montemor-o-Novo é possível apanhar um táxi na praça principal
(siga as setas que indicam "CENTRO"). Custou-me 8 € regressar a
Torre da Gadanha.
