Benicia has a long and colorful history:
When Robert Semple founded the town in 1846 he named the town
'Francisca' after the wife of Gen. Mariano Vallejo, who had given
him half-title in the land. But that was too close to San
Francisco, a name later adopted by a nearby 'burg, so they changed
it to her second name, 'Benicia.'
Benicia was the first city in the new state of California to be
incorporated and at the same time was named the county seat of
Solano County. For a time it was the capitol of California, before
the legislature moved to Sacramento.
Benicia became known as 'The Athens of the West' for the large
number of schools there, including the first setting of Mills
College.
U.S. Grant, William Tecumsah Sherman, Jack London and Stephen
Vincent Benet all lived in Benicia at one time.
Concepcion Arguello, the first native Californian to become a
Dominican nun, and one-half of a pair of star-crossed lovers known
from California to Russia is buried here, where she lived and
taught at the Dominican school after the death of her Russian
suitor, Count Nikolai Rezanov.
