Geocache Description:

This is the same cache container and log as RIBS2 - C7.  However, it has been moved off a busy road to make it safer for caching.  It has a new GC code.

We enjoyed the Battleship (RI) Series that CATOZ set up -- as a winter friendly series that got us more familiar with Rhode Island roads after we moved here in 2017 😊.  As we neared the end, we encountered a couple of missing caches.   This felt like working on a large jigsaw puzzle only to find that it is missing a couple of pieces ☹️.  So that other partial solvers can "finish the puzzle" and new cachers can again play the Battleship Game in Rhode Island, we worked with previous finders to reconstruct the 6 mystery caches - five ships of various sizes and the Final.   Special thanks to 4Swans for help with missing codes and hyperlinks.

We are calling the new series RIBS2 Series (Rhode Island Battleship Series #2).

To complete this series, you will need to find 5 battleships of various sizes hidden within an 8 x 8 grid.

Following the Battleship Game rules, ships may be arranged either horizontally or vertically (not diagonally).  In addition, ships cannot be next to each other.

Each of these 64 Traditional Caches (RIBS2: A1 – RIBS2: H8) will have either a “Hit” or a “Miss”.  These are generally park and grabs, though in a few cases the parking is in a nearby lot rather than on the side of the road next to the cache.  Once you get near GZ, geosense should make for a quick find.  You will need tweezers to extract the log and a pen to sign it.

Each “Hit” will contain a north code and a west code that will be used to determine the location of the ship.  When you sink a ship, you will get a numeric code needed to get the Final.

Please re-hide each cache as you found it and do not state in your log whether the cache is a Hit or a Miss.

===========================================================================

The Aircraft Carrier is found at N41o 32.NNN  W071o 36.WWW, where NNN is the sum of the five north codes found in the Hits and WWW is the sum of the five west codes in the Hits.

The Battleship is found at N41o 32.NNN  W071o 28.WWW, where NNN is the sum of the four north codes found in the Hits and WWW is the sum of the four west codes in the Hits.

The Cruiser is found at N41o 34.NNN  W071o 35.WWW, where NNN is the sum of the three north codes found in the Hits and WWW is the sum of the three west codes in the Hits.

The Submarine is found at N41o 37.NNN  W071o 31.WWW, where NNN is the sum of the three north codes found in the Hits and WWW is the sum of the three west codes in the Hits.

The Destroyer is found at N41o 28.NNN  W071o 33.WWW, where NNN is the sum of the two north codes found in the Hits and WWW is the sum of the two west codes in the Hits.

The Final cache is found at N41o 3A.BCD  W71o 3E.FGH, where codes A through H are found in the 5 Ship caches.  Unlike the rest of the series, some hiking and bushwhacking is needed to get to GZ. The rating for the final cache is D1.5/T2.

Happy Caching!

Notes for those who got partway through the original series:

  • The original hides were placed in a 10x10 grid used for the Battleship Game, making for 100 traditional caches and 6 mystery caches for a total of 106 hides  We chose to use an 8x 8 grid instead because "8" is a lucky number in Chinese culture and to reduce maintenance requirements (i.e., 70 total hides).  Since you still need 17 hits to solve the puzzle, this change increases your chances of getting a hit!
  • The original description set up the grid with letters down the rows and numbers across the columns.  Our grid above shows numbers down the rows and letters across the columns.  This presentation change was made to allow you to place hits and misses in Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets or Apple Numbers.   It has no intended significance in solving the puzzle.
  • Hits may have been moved in order to fit the smaller sized grid.  However, the relative positions of the battleships have been maintained.
  • Two ships that used to be adjacent are now separated by ocean.
  • The Aircraft Carrier has been relocated to a place with better parking and far fewer prickers.
