Geocache Description:

Please bring your own pen and be discreet in this busy area.

This cache is of part of The New England Franco-Route Geotour (GT4A7). The New England Franco-Route will guide you to the places, in Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Rhode Island where thousands of French Canadians settled to work, live and create new communities at the turn of the 20th century.

Biddeford, ME is a city of approximately 22,000 residents and located in the commercial center of York County. The Franco-American presence is alive and well with not only the history of this area, but with the annual La Kermesse Franco-Americaine Festival.

Other Franco-American sites include Shevenell Park, which was named in honor of Israel Shevenell, perhaps the first French-Canadian in the city, who walked to Biddeford from Quebec's Eastern Townships in 1845.

In 2015, Ray Shevenell, Israel’s great-great grandson, made it his mission to recreate the 200-mile trek in honor of his ancestor. Ray’s daughter, Tonya Shevenell, made a documentary about her father’s journey in the film, The Home Road.
