Cob (Canterbury) Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Sallies: Unfortunately we feel that we need to archive this cache and so have uplifted it this morning. The building itself has been extensively damaged in the earthquake and much of it is cordoned off. Also, the machinery being used for the strengthening of the Ferrymead bridge is coming close to encroaching on the area at the rear of the cottage. If Cob Cottage is ever restored we will consider leaving a new cache at this site. In the meantime just give a quick glance to this historical site as you pass.

Geocache Description:

The cache is located close to a busy road. There is no parking directly in front of the cache site so park nearby and walk back to the site.

This is a little known Christchurch historical site as there are no signs to indicate its existence. The original building was built in the 1860's by Captain James Penfold. The story goes that after his schooner ran aground on the Sumner Bar, Penfold helped construct the Ferrymead railway line and then built this place with timber framing that came from the wreck. After falling into disrepair the building was reconstructed in the 1940s by Ernest Parish.

The cache is hidden approximately 2 metres from the SW corner of the building. It is invisible from 1 metre.

The cache is in a film canister. There are log files and a pencil inside the canister and there is no room for anything else.

Check the Triangulation cache while you are in the area.
