Geocache Description:

Hidden on Neversink Mountain, the cache is located near the McIlvain Pavilion, named to honor William McIlvain, an avid hiker who often stopped to rest at that spot. The Pavilion, more popularly known as the Witch's Hat because of its cone-shaped roof, was built in 1892. It is one of the few existing reminders that Neversink Mountain was once teeming with life as a playground for the well-heeled and well-connected.

When it was built, the pavilion was on the grounds of what was the Neversink Hotel, a resort for patrons mainly from Philadelphia and New York. By most accounts, when the hotel opened in 1892, it was made clear that locals were not welcome. Burned by arson shortly after the turn of the 20th century, the five-story hotel smoldered into memory. Now, the land the hotel once occupied is owned by the Berks County Conservancy and is open for exploration. What was once open space for the hotel has become a forest. Looking over the city's east side and through the valley to Mount Penn and the Pagoda, the view is a reward for a hike well done.

The original container was a light green Ammo Can with a simple mountain flower and alpine scene painted inside the lid. Ten years had taken it's toll on that original container. The new container is now unfortunately sans decoration.

Hidden on Neversink Mountain, the nearby pavilion has unfortunately been somewhat vandalized with spray paint. Even though the graffiti has marred the original pristine beauty of the overlook, the view is still inspiring.

To reach the summit, you have several options. The more invigorating approach would be to hike or bike in on the EXETER SCENIC RIVER TRAIL on the old trolley bed then climb to the lookout point. This is not for the novice as it is several miles from the parking to the lookout. The shorter, pleasant hike is approx. .50 miles round-trip from the Conservancy parking area @N40 19.372 W75 53.892. There is room enough for 1-2 vehicles if parked considerately...please do not block the gate! Hunting is allowed so do proceed with caution and wear fluorescent orange during hunting season. Do NOT attempt to reach cache site via the power line 'cut' as this is steep and close to private property. Cache placed in honor of SCHNEEBERG WASSERMAN. Thanks to the Berks Conservancy for this hide, and for adopting it over to me so that it could continue to receive appropriate Owner Maintenance.

The Berks County Conservancy allows the public to hide geocaches on land it protects provided they ask for approval. We will provide the "Approved Geocache" logo and ask that it is included with the description.
