This is a peaceful site today, but the stone sign says:
"Joseph Barnard Godfrey Nims, Henry White and Philip Mattoon, going to mill on horseback were here fired upon
by Indians in ambush. Barnard was mortally wounded Aug. 21, 1695. and died Sept. 6. He was the first Town Clerk and
'A very useful & helpful man in ye place.”
