Geocache Description:

The Ashuwillticook Rail Trail (ART) is the gem of the Berkshires.  This series of 10 caches will bring you from Adams to Lanesboro on the original sections of the ART.  They are all placed with permission and not too far off the trail.

"The Ashuwillticook Rail Trail is an old railroad track converted into a 10-foot wide paved trail. The trail runs 12.7 miles through the towns of Cheshire, Lanesborough and Adams. Cheshire Reservoir, and the Hoosic River offer outstanding views of the scenery and wildlife. Parking lots and restrooms are available at selected locations along the way."  https://www.mass.gov/locations/ashuwillticook-rail-trail

"The Ashuwillticook Rail Trail is a rail trail built on a former railroad corridor that runs parallel to Route 8 through the towns of CheshireLanesborough and AdamsMassachusetts and is used for biking, walking, roller-blading, and jogging. The trail is managed by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR).  Its first two phases opened in 2001 and 2004, with a 1.2-mile northerly extension opening in May 2017.  The southern end of the trail begins at the entrance to the Berkshire Mall, off of Route 8 in Lanesborough, and travels 12.2 miles (19.6 km) north to the center of Adams.

The Ashuwillticook Rail Trail passes through the Hoosac River Valley, between Mount Greylock and the Hoosac Mountains. Cheshire Reservoir, the Hoosic River, and associated wetland communities flank much of the trail. The word Ashuwillticook (ash-oo-will-ti-cook) is from the American Indian name for the south branch of the Hoosic River and literally means “at the in-between pleasant river,” or in common tongue, “the pleasant river in between the hills.”"  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashuwillticook_Rail_Trail

In 2021 work has begun to extend the ART into Pittsfield from the Lanesboro end.  In Williamstown there is also construction happening to eventually connect it to through North Adams and back to Adams.

People travel from long distances to enjoy the beauty of this trail.
