Otterbox Lookout got its name from a scouting trip trying to find the perfect place to hide this cache. At the very end of the trail, down by the railroad tracks, we came across an otter that made a great splash and found lots of signs that this wetland is its chosen home. Otters are known for their playfulness and he had ripped down marker tape for the recent event that was likely blowing in the breeze like a toy. Just for fun, when logging the find, please note what wildlife you observed while at this location!
This geocache is located on the Pogorelc Sanctuary and overlooking Popolo Pond. This is the short trail with a ton of wildlife that can be accessed just behind the Barnstable Land Trust Conservation Center Building. This trail has been designated as dog-free, so please leave your geo dogs at home due to the fragile ecosystem here. This cache is being placed with permission and support from the Barnstable Land Trust for publishing to honor the First Day Hikes Cape Cod initiative encouraging people to get outside on New Year's Day 2022. The trail here is well maintained and a fun place for quick exploration and a short hike. There are boardwalks and a lookout platform to view impressive flocks of herons, egrets, and cormorantsseasonally and otter activity in the winter. Wetlands bring a variety of species rich with diversity, so you never know what you might find! Also, very close to the nearby train tracks, you may find yourself waving to the Cape Cod Dinner Train.
