Edmands Park Warming Hut Cache
Founded in 1913 on land donated by their family, Edmands Park was named in memory of notable Newton businessman and U.S. Congressman J. Wiley Edmands (1809-1877) and his son A. Lawrence Edmands (1838-1909).
In 1934, the Works Project Administration dammed and dredged Edmands Brook to create an ice skating pond in the northern section of the park. At the time, ice skating was a popular winter pastime and the Edmands Park skating area was supposed to add another place for Newtonians to skate in addition to Bullough’s Pond, Crystal Lake and parts of the Charles River. Unfortunately the project was never completed.
The cache is located at what remains of the WPA warming hut for skaters, its stone foundation and fireplace chimney. Edmands Park is now a popular location for dog walking and running.
