Geocache Description:

This virtual geocache is based on the film “The Friends of Eddie Coyle,” a gangster and robbery movie from 1973 set in and around Boston, Massachusetts.  Notice how many exterior scenes there are with enticing clues about where they were filmed.

To log a "Find" for this cache:

Step 1:  Visit the posted coordinates, which were the site of one of the early scenes in the film (described below).  Take a photo.  A visit to this stage is required.

Step 2: Continue on to at least three of the remaining six waypoints of our seven-part virtual geocache series, which you can do in any order.  This will take you to the locations of additional scenes shot in or south of Boston.  Note that a couple of the sites can be very crowded in summer.  We've tried to make those two stops quick ones, since you may find parking difficult.

Step 3: While you are driving around south of Boston, you might consider driving by Eddie Coyle’s fictional house at 236 Fayette Street in Wollaston (a part of Quincy); there is no geocache stage to be found there, as it is a private residence.

There are some filming locations in and near Boston that no longer exist:  The bar that the characters spend quite a bit of time at is the former Kentucky Tavern (southeast corner of Newbury St. and Mass Ave); the interior diner  scenes are  perhaps  in Worcester Lunch Car # 739 “The Garden Diner” which used to be at 34 Nashua Street near the Garden (according to diner expert Richard Gutman); the Rowe’s Quarry site in Malden now has apartment buildings on it.

There are several other scenes in Boston, too obvious for a geocache: Government Center, Boston Common, Boston Garden (TD Garden), and the Callahan Tunnel.

We were also tempted to place a geocache at one of the bench shelters near the corner of Memorial Drive and Danforth Street in Cambridge (near MIT) looking out over the Charles River toward the sparse skyline of 1973.  (The old Hancock, The “new” Hancock, and The Pru.)

Seven locations in The Friends of Eddie Coyle Series:

  1. Site of the first bank robbery.
  2. Site of the former Kentucky Tavern.
  3. Carson Beach, with an old brick octagonal refreshment stand (can be very crowded in summer).
  4. Houghtons Pond, with an interesting old refreshment stand (can be very crowded in summer).
  5. Railroad station site of an illegal transaction and attempted getaway.
  6. A candy house and tenpin alley, where Eddie and Jackie Brown meet to discuss arms.
  7. The former site of Barbo’s Furniture in Dedham Plaza (now a Carters Childrens store).

To fulfill the requirements of this virtual cache, you must visit the first site and at least three of the other sites and post a photo from each of yourself (or group), your GPSr device or phone, or a similar token of geocaching.  Extra credit for poses that match the relevant scene(s) in the film.  The coordinates for the locations are below, and parking is near each one (especially the sites that are essentially parking lots!).

Congratulations to ritell on a very quick FTF!

Watching the film is not a requirement, but picking out all the recognizable locations Is a special treat!
