Geocache Description:

This is a simple offset multi which requires you to find a few numbers before working out the final cache location which is only a short distance from the headline coordinates.

The St Blazey Gate Toll House was one of four known Toll Houses belonging to the St Austell and Lostwithiel Turnpike Trust which was created in 1761 to maintain and widen the 18 mile stretch of the road from the eastern boundary of Grampound to West Taphouse.

In addition, there were at least four Side Bars which were where road users were charged to exit the Turnpike. For example, there was a side bar at Pelyn between St Blazey and Lostwithiel where travellers would be charged to leave the turnpike to head north towards Bodmin where they would then be charged to use Bodmin Trust Turnpike.

The toll house was strategically placed where it had a good view of the road in both directions and this one is conveniently placed at the summit of gentle hill climbs to the east and west so the traffic would be travelling even more slowly than usual.

At the headline coordinates you will see the white-painted toll house which has a decorative metal wheel attached to its front wall;

The house is a private residence - please respect the property and do not trespass. All the information you require can be obtained without leaving the public footpath or, indeed, by using a bit of on-line skill!!

To find the cache, answer the following questions:

  • What is the Old Toll House  address number = AB
  • What is the three-digit number of the A road that used to be the turnpike = CDE
  • How many letters in the first word of the Cornish name of the side road at the toll house = F

The cache can be found at N 50 21.E(C+A)F W 004 43.(D-B)A(D-F)
