The Town of Brentwood recently acquired the conservation easement due to a generous donation for the property that is near the existing Glen Oakes conservation area, Spruce Swamp, the nearby Rockingham Rail Trail, and it is conveniently off Route 125. You will see the kiosk at the entrance to this trail system, the SELT Spruce Swamp Conservation Area. I plugged in 292 Calef Highway (Route 125) to arrive at the parking area. Veer to the left and follow the trail sign into the parking (straight is a private residence). There are a couple of trail systems. I followed the white trail in this area. The uplands forest provides shelter for many animals, several of them are threatened. The Spruce Swamp is one of the few wilderness areas left in Southern New Hampshire. The overall 1700 acre forest has trails but no roads or buildings. The forest and wetlands combination is one of the highest quality wildlife habitats in the state. When I visited, I saw evidence of moose, deer and see numerous birds such as blue herons. There are ancient trees that have not been harvested for 100 years or more, including large oak trees, red pine and a rare white pine that is over 100-years old. The property nearby was once an open pasture, and the stone walls were likely animal pasture fences. Please observe all the tree guardians that stand watch in this area. It appears that this area has not been logged for many years.
The cache is winter friendly and is a black bison.
