Geocache Description:

A Scout is Thrifty.
A Scout is Thrifty Being thrifty means being mindful of your resources. Whether it’s money, time, or possessions, a scout who’s thrifty will not waste needlessly. This means not seeking out status by showing off your belongings, and instead, choosing things based on the value you’ll get from them. In our Troop, we had an Eagle Scout candidate who was  not familiar with the meaning of thrifty. We now discuss this in greater detail with our scouts. We hope that this will make your journey easier if you choose the path to being thrifty with your resources.   There are 12 laws of scouting: A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent. Thrifty is one of those 12 Scout Laws.

Cache to Eagle®
Celebrating Scouting Leadership and Service

Reaching the rank of Eagle Scout requires years of dedication and hard work. In addition to 21 required merit badges, each Scout must complete an extensive service project that he plans, organizes, leads, and manages. On average, each Scout conducts 167 service hours as part of that project. In 2008 alone, that translated to $16 million* in service to communities across America.

Cache to Eagle is a partnership between Geoscouting, the BSA, and Geocaching.com to highlight Eagle projects across the nation. Through the program, participants set up normal public caches at Eagle project sites that also happen to be good cache spots. Dozens of public caches that showcase these remarkable sites are already posted, and the initial response has been fantastic. Hundreds of people visit the Eagle Scout projects, and many of them write public notes on the logs at Geocaching.com.

About this cache and project:
Spruce Swamp Conservation Area is convently located off  Route 125 in Brentwood and has parking for 10-12 vehicles. The ammo can cache is placed down a very nice trail system and is nicely finished for hiking or biking.  I loaded it with scouting swag and hope to keep it stocked as it becomes depleted. There are a couple of trackables in it as well to move along. I hope that folks will continue to log and trade them to keep it stocked with at least one in the cache at all times. I also put in a proxy tag of the original  DWC Thrifty coin for discovery in a large baggie. FTF also gets a patch, as well as other swag.  Please choose one.  Contact me if you want other scout items. I do have more to replenish. Please cover the cache well after you find it so it is not visible.

I saw evidence of moose, deer, and I saw multiple birds and a large beaver lodge which is the treat a half mile down this trail. The trail will bring you to  the Spruce Swamp area. Spruce Swamp is one of the few wilderness areas left in southern New Hampshire. This 824 acre wetland is nestled within a large 1706 acre forest that is not segmented by roads and buildings. This forest and wetland combination is one of the highest quality wildlife habitats in the state. Biologists  also identified 104 animal and 150 plant species in the  nearby Glen Oakes Town Forest. Of those, at least nine species of plants and animals are endangered or threatened in New Hampshire. There are vernal pools located throughout providing habitat for amphibians and food for turtles. We suggest you enjoy the interconnecting trail systems here, the beaver activity, and the variety of forest, uplands, swamp and bogs. Please post a picture of the area.

The area is the site of SELT Spruce Swamp Conservation Area, a really nice trail system that interconnects with Spruce Swamp,  is near the Rockingham Rail Trail, Oak Ridge Town Forest and near the site of a B-52 plane crash. Check out some of the other caches in the area and the Geo-scouting series.
