Geocache Description:

Please be respectful of this area as it is a more delicate historical landmark. The cache is not hidden within the walls of the pound or behind the sign or gate! This cache was created with preserving history in mind not tampering with it, so please do not disturb the historical landmark that this cache is attempting to commemorate! Thanks! :D

This cache was placed in commemoration of the Old Town Pound which sits to the left of Marshal Pond. The following provides a brief history of the Town Pound from the town's website:

"Lunenburg’s history as an agrarian community is evident throughout the Town. One only needs to ride down Lancaster Avenue, Mulpus Road, or Leominster Road and be greeted by rolling fields with grazing dairy cattle and cultivated farmland to become aware that a rich farming history is part of Lunenburg’s past. Closer to the center of town is a component of that history known as the Town Pound. Located on Highland Street adjacent to Marshall Pond the current Pound dates back to 1750. It is a stone-walled keeping area with an iron gate and a storied history. Back in the day, as the current saying goes, there were frequent occurrences of a horse or cow or sheep straying off from their pasture and traversing the Town. Once found they were taken to the Pound Keeper who would then put them in the stone-walled enclosure and care for them with feed and water until the farmer came by to retrieve the wayward animal. The keeper would be paid a small sum by the farmer for his care. Today, the Town annually appoints a Pound Keeper and for many years it has been the Molter and Larkin families that have maintained the title and position as well as the property itself and a vital piece of Lunenburg history."

This cache was placed in cooperation with the Town of Lunenburg's Park Commission and Select Board. If an issue presents itself please send me a direct message, and I will respond accordingly. The reason behind the placement of this cache originates about 8 years ago. I was a young boy, and I attempted to place an array of caches within Lunenburg with my father. However, this fell through, and the desire to place caches was temporarily put to rest. With that said, I had the opportunity to go through the Town government and receive support behind the placement of this (these) cache(s). The placement of this specific cache was part of my 2022 Senior Project for my AP English Literature and Composition class at Lunenburg High School, in which I placed multiple caches within the town center of Lunenburg. It has truly been a dream of mine to place caches within my hometown, and I couldn't be happier with the result. Happy caching!
