Geocache Description:

This swag-stuffed cache with TBs and FTF Geocoin is located just above floodline of the 2011 Hurricane Irene devastation.

___

Tropical Storm Irene moved northward into Vermont on Augusr 28, 2011. It had left a path of destruction along its way through southern New Engand and New York.

Although the winds were ony moderately strong the storm produced heavy rainfall which lead to devastating fooding. As the state awoke on the morning of August 29th, reports started pouring in from across the counties. In all, as storm assessments were done it was tallied that ...

  • 500 miles of roadway and 1,200 bridges and culverts were damaged or destoryed
  • 3,500 homes were damaged or destroyed
  • 629 culture sites were damaged
  • 20,000 acres of farmland was flooded
  • Miles of power and fiberoptic lines washed away resulting in 50,000 power outages

During the storm a total of 4-8 inches of rain fell in less than 18 hours! Rivers and streams swelled and overflowed taking with them trees, boulders, and many things in their paths - including buildings and vehicles.

Southern Vermont and the Williams River (near where this cache is located) were in some of the hardest hit areas. Overall, Irene caused over $700 milliion in damages to state infrastructure and private proprerty. Due to this, Tropical Storm Irene ranks 2nd as the greatest natural disaster in Vermont's history with the flood of 1927 being the worst.
