A short hike to one of the finest viewpoints in the state, near Falls Village. Please see WINTER INFO!
The hike to this cache is under one mile, and the view is well worth the effort. I made this one a virtual because you will be on the Appalachian trail once you reach the cache location, which is NPS territory (read: no caches). But the real treasure here is the view. Be sure to go on a clear sunny day - if you enjoy foliage, fall is the absolute best time (the peak may be past, but it's still colorful).
Park in the hiker lot on Sugar Hill Road at N41*58.161 W73*23.054. You'll know you're there when you see the "No Vehicles Beyond This Point" sign.
To claim this cache, find the following info and email it to me:
1. There is structure located at N41*58.525 W73*23.533. To whom is it dedicated?
2. The name of the viewpoint can be found on a sign at N41*58.830 W73*23.567. Signs can disappear, and in this case they can be covered with snow. If you can't find the name of the viewpoint, describe the wording of any one of the three signs you will find at this point.
After you log the info, continue north on the white blazed AT for another 500 feet to the view. From there you will be able to see Bear Mountain and Mt. Everett, with its abandoned fire tower.
Sugar Hill Road and the blue blazed trail to the cache were both the route of the AT up until a few years ago - Garmin's topo map data still shows this old route. You may notice blacked out blazes on trees and telephone poles.
If it's rained recently, or if you visit in the spring, you don't want to miss the Great Falls, which are just north of the one lane Iron Bridge in Falls Village. When the flow on the Housatonic is more than the hydro plant needs, these falls put on a show to rival Niagara, complete with mist.
Finally, I rated the terrain a 4 because of one short steep section about halfway into the hike, plus feedback from other cachers. In winter this steep section can be treacherous - please see the winter rules to avoid getting hurt. Pay close attention to the blue blazes on the trail - they aren't too plentiful north of the structure and it's easy to lose the path.
WINTER INFO: to claim winter credit for this cache, hike in from Falls Village on the white blazed Appalachian trail. Send me info per #2 above (skip #1). This lets you avoid a dangerous climb, although it does increase the hiking distance.
