How Geocaching Works

Geocache Description:

This multi-cache begins at the head of the Lake Country Recreational Trail, one of Waukesha's newest biking and hiking trails. Park at the beautifully restored Landsberg Center, N43 02.852 W88 16.386. The final cache coordinates are N43 0L.KLJ W88 1N.PMC.

The small camouflaged cache container is a Thermos approximately 3 inches in diameter by 2 ½ inches deep. Inside you will find 12 tagged (paper) monarch butterflies. One of my second grade classes is trying to simulate a monarch migration to Mexico via geocaching. Please take an individually named and numbered monarch and leave it in a geocache further SOUTH. E-mail the address on the butterfly (me) to let the class know where you picked up the monarch and where you dropped it off. We hope to get the 12 monarchs to Mexico before the end of April. Please leave something small in this cache so it can continue after all of the monarchs have "flown."

Thank you fellow geocacher, Talzhemir, for creating this wonderful project (visit link) . We educators appreciate innovative ways to integrate geocaching and technology into our curriculum.

The Monarchs are all on their way to Mexico, but the cache is fun anyway. Be prepared for a long hike on flat ground.

Now for the cache:
Waypoint 1: N43 02.9A2 W88 16.4B

A = the number of flag poles at the front of the Landsberg Center
B = the number of windows on the back of the Landsberg Center X 4 (don't count the one in the door)

At waypoint 1, use the 4 digit number on the silver, rectangular tag to figure out the coordinates for waypoint 2.
C = the sum of the first 2 digits minus half of the first digit.
D = the last 2 digit number + 1.

Waypoint 2: N43 03.00C W88 16.5D

Stop at waypoint 2. From the direction you are traveling, turn 90 degrees to the right. Look in a northerly direction for a vertical 4 digit number. Add all of the digits and multiply the sum by 13 to get the 3 digit number that E is equal to.
From that same position, look in an easterly direction for a vertical 4 digit number. Add all of the digits together and then add the first digit again to get the 2 digit number that F equals.

Waypoint 3: N43 03.E W88 17.0F

At waypoint 3, find a number that is a palindrome.
Subtract the first digit from the second digit to get G.
H = the product of the third and fourth digits divided by 2.
J = the last digit in the palindromic number.
K = the middle digit in the palindromic number.

Waypoint 4: N43 03.GHJ W88 17.JKG

At waypoint 4, count the number of letters on the sign. Use this information to figure out the final cache waypoint.
L = 1/3 of M.
M = the number of letters on the sign.
N = K + L
P = L + G

Recess! N43 03.LNK W88 17.L8G
Look up in a scrub tree right alongside the trail for a huge hornet's nest (if it is still there). 5/2003...seems the hornet's nest did not survive the winter.

The final cache location is N43 0L.KLJ W88 1N.PMC

Please replace the cache carefully so that it will stay well hidden. Thanks.
