Trains have played a big part in many aspects of Newmarket's history. Trains coming through Newmarket Depot transported riders to the north or to Rockingham Junction Station, about 1.5 miles to the south. Built around 1890, Rockingham Junction Station was a busy interchange of two railroad lines and a state highway - connecting passengers to Boston and Maine as well as Manchester and Portsmouth. In 1910 and again in 1911, the Newmarket Manufacturing Company transported its workers and their families by train to Hampton Beach for the annual Newmarket Day extravaganza.
By the 1960s, the train no longer stopped in Newmarket, but freight trains and The Downeaster, a passenger train service operated by Amtrak, still come right through town. If you’re lucky, you’ll hear The Downeaster whistle through while you’re at ground zero!
