As can be said for most settlements in the region, it is also true here that artifacts have been found since prehistoric times, and many people fought against each other ... however ... Gradiska's special feature today is the border that separates the free travel from the inspected.
The history of the settlement goes back a long way, as its first written mention can be made at the end of the 13th century. After that, the area was characterized by Turkish rule, massacre, resettlement and revival. During the First World War, it was still part of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. Nowadays, the bridge separating the two parts of the settlement functions as an important border crossing, since the Szava River has been the border separating the territories for centuries.
However, the cache wants to point to a narrower time interval, which is none other than II. World War period. Today, only the ruins of the former concentration camp remain from the castle.
In 1942, Ógradiska Castle became part of the Jasenovac complex - as Camp V. Supervision was provided by Ustasa, and primarily women and children were detained. At the end of the year, Miroslav Filipović Franciscan monk, military chaplain entered the camp to the head. The commander personally participated in the tortures and executions.
The horrors ended in May 1945, when the partisans liberated the area.
After the war, the buildings became a prison.
With a short walk, we can visit the memorial to the victims in the nearby cemetery. According to the sign, it was erected in 1951 by the NOR (Antifascists and Soldiers Association).
