Geocache Description:

A cacher in the Franklin area could spin a creepy tale about Adder Pond: Giant slithering, slimy poisonous adders lurk around the edge of the pond, waiting for naïve and unsuspecting cache seekers to come within range of their fearsome reach.  Their long curved shiny fangs sink quickly into the leg muscles and inject slow acting venom.  They gather and watch as the venom slowly and painfully paralyzes first the leg, then the heart, and finally the brain.  The victim tips into the dark, cold, tannic acid laced water.  Soon only the bones will rest on the muddy bottom filled with decaying leaves.  (Students at the nearby private school whose campus includes the pond secretly raised Piranhas in a hidden aquarium in their dorm room, but had to dump it in the pond when the school year ended and they had to return to Connecticut).

The truth is that the pond is safe.  Nobody knows why it called Adder Pond.  The sign at the beginning of the bumpy dirt road that leads to the launch and parking says Hopkins Pond.  Google maps also says Hopkins Pond.  My Garmin GPSr says Adder Pond.  In fact, the only adder in the US is the Hognose snake which only has a mild venom which is injected into its prey by teeth, not fangs.  Also called the Puff Adder, it is rarely found only in a small area of southern NH.

More truth: I am the adder.  I have added a second cache to the pond. I hope that this will entice more people to come.  I well know the effort that goes into putting a canoe or kayak into a pickup or strapping one to a car.  Then removing it from the vehicle, putting it the water, parking, and then getting into the boat without it tipping.  Not to speak of the reverse of this project when leaving the pond.  This is a two for one.  You go through all of that for not one, but two caches.  An extra bonus is that both caches do not require you to get out of the craft.
