The History

Charles Paine moved to Northfield VT as a young man to run his family's woolen mill. From that time forward he was very much at the center of activity in the town. Paine's Meeting House was built for the millworkers and is today known as the United Church of Northfield. In town he also had a hotel and a store, and later the large train depot. His home on Main Street today serves as the Northfield Historical Society, and connects to the town public library and community spaces.

Early on, Paine held the offices of Town Selectman and Moderator of the Town Meeting in Northfield. He served as a member of the Vermont House of Representatives from 1828 through 1829, and later was elected the 15th Governor of Vermont from 1841 until 1843.

Paine is most often remembered as the individual who brought railroads to Vermont. He founded the Vermont Central Railroad with a charter in 1843 as he left the governorship, and served as the first president of the company. Amusingly, he routed the main trunk line through his home town and built the company headquarters here despite the hilly terrain, choosing to connect to Montpelier and Barre via a short spur line.

In 1853 while working to help select a transcontinental route for the Southern Pacific Railroad, Paine fell ill with dysentery and died at age 54. As noted on his grave marker, "he died in a distant land, far from those who loved him." His final journey brought his body back to his home along his railroad.

The Monument

Due east of the posted coordinates you'll see the tallest monument in the cemetery, marking the Governor's resting spot. Collect this information from the monument and use it to find the final.

  • A = the chamfered base of this monument has four sides. How many sides have no words engraved in it?
  • BC = two-digit number. Count the number of words on the face that mentions the governorship, and add 10.
  • X = Charles' mother: count the number of letters in her first name, and subtract the number of letters in her last name
  • Y = To the advancement of Vermont's great public works, Charles applied his talents, wealth, and {blank}. Count the number of letters in the missing word.
  • Z = the day of the month in which Paine died

The Cache
