Hidden in Yang Ming Shan National Park, at ChingTienGang (Buffalo
Meadow)
Buffalo Meadow is beautiful, grassy area up in the mountains
(elevation approximately 700 meters). A great place for hiking,
picnics, or just lying around in the cool mountain air on a hot
summer day. It is a 20-30 minute drive from Taipei American School
(TienMu). If you get there early enough in the morning (before 9:30
am), parking isn't a problem, depending on the weather. If it's a
beautiful day, you should go earlier. Park your car in the parking
lot at N 25* 10.020', E 121* 34.403'. But you have to pay for
it.
Start walking on the stone trail. When you get to the fork in the
trail, take the left fork. Stay on the trail until you get past the
first hill. Then, you will need to go cross-country. On a nice day,
this area will have lots of visitors. Try to be discrete when you
re-hide the cache. This cache is originally created by kasapearson
who are Americans living in Taipei some days ago, and have really
enjoyed exploring Taiwan. They hope this geocache will get some
people out of the city. Because they move back to US., The
ownership trasnfer to me(rjt).
Be careful about the weather. It might be a sunny day in Taipei,
but foggy and drizzling on the mountain. If you see any Water
Buffalo, be careful... they're harmless, but not always. News said
that some ones got hurt by them. They are tame Water
Buffalo that were brought here for their retirement.
Another important thing: In the beginning, the terrain around
the cache is flat/low grass. But for some natural reasons(to allow
bugs and snakes to bear babies!), the weeds are not mowed/cut by
the park accidentally. They say they'll mow between March to
September. But they seem forget the area around this cache.
So, visitors should bring enough gears and choose a correct
seasons/days to prevent dangers such as snakes, invisible
stream......etc. For avoiding snakes, the best season is winter.
You also need thick, long sticks to break the tall grass which
blocks you. Rain shoes, gloves are necessary, too.
Of course, you must take the responsibility
for your personal safety. BE VERY
CAREFUL!!!!!!!!!
Additional exploring from this location can be fun. Serious hikers
can follow the trails all the way back to Taipei. There is a hidden
cave about 30 meters down the stream from the cache, on the left
side of the stream. The coordinates for the entrance are: N 25°
09.903 E 121° 34.610. If you're really adventurous, bring a good
flashlight and shoes that can get wet!
(Caution: we don't know if this cave is safe or not. We were not
adventurous or prepared enough to go inside.)
Be sure to write us a note, and any ideas you have for good nature
outings in Taiwan.
Note: For the extreme moisture, there is no
log book inside. Hunters must upload the photos with the cache
& the GPSr for verification. And please don't put in any
treasure which may be damaged by water or moisture, such as paper,
wooden things. Thanks & don't forget it!
