A beautiful county park with plenty of hiking, biking and walking trails. Plan an afternoon there! (Sorry Wagsalot, Tammy and other canine cachers ... no doggies allowed.)
This cache was originally hidden by Kreebelle and her kids, and their original description is below. Many people are curious as to what exactly is at the cache site. When the nearby meadow was St. Joseph's school, this site was a grotto set up for the worship of the Virgin Mary. While the area has seen better days, if you look closely you'll see the non-native landscaping around the cache and other remains of landscaping efforts. Somewhat South of the cache you'll see footings for a non-existent bridge. It's possible that an entire set of the stations of the cross occupied this site. Now all that's left is the grotto.
This is the first cache we've hidden. We walked on a paved/hardpacked trail pushing a stroller for about half a mile from the logical parking lot (there are others not as logical!). We (two adults, three kids) then cut off the trail near our favorite landmark in the park -- a gigantic bay tree that dominates the landscape. The 12-year-old had no trouble getting to the place we picked, the 3-year-old got there with a little help, the 18-month old stayed in his stroller parked within eyesight of the cache. There is an easier way than the obvious path to this cache, so don't get discouraged if it looks too hard. The original cache is in a clear Rubbermaid 1.5 liter bottle with a white screw-on lid. Original contents include: Oh ... if you continue .5 miles down the trail you will find a cute little farm open every day but Wed. until 4 p.m. (open until 1 p.m. on Wed.). If you go this way, take a moment to enjoy the GIGANTIC bay laurel tree that grows (literally) up through the hardpacked trail near the cache (sniff one of its leaves!). You'll also encounter a beautiful oak tree, and the largest eucalyptus tree I've ever seen.
