Fort Pickens, the largest of four forts built to defend Pensacola Bay and it's Navy Yard.

The fort was begun in 1829, completed in 1834, and used until 1947. Over 21.5 million bricks were required, most made locally and barged to the island.

Ironically, the only action the Fort saw was when the country was at war with itself. Fort Pickens was one of four seacoast forts in the South that remained in Union control during the Civil War. In 1861, Union forces at Fort Pickens faced Confederates holding the mainland. Fort Pickens traded shots with Fort Barrancas across the bay but due to the limitations of the cannons of the time, very little damage was caused by either side.

This fort is also unusual in that it was modified over the years, most notably the construction of Battery Pensacola in 1898 covering almost half the parade ground of the original fort. Smooth bore cannon were replaced, recycled, or converted to rifled cannon.

To log this cache go to the sign in the center of the remaining parade ground, directily behind Battery Pensacola. The title subject in the upper left corner says Reuse & Recycling. Answer the following question: What year was the 10-inch smoothbore cannon converted to an 8-inch rifled cannon by inserting an 8-inch rifled sleeve? The answer is NOT 1898, so don't try it...lol. Please do not put your answer in your log entry, even encrypted. Send the answer to me in an e-mail prior to making your log entry.

Be aware there is an $8.00 charge per vehicle to enter the park area containing Fort Pickens and all of the Batterys and the Fort close at sundown. The $8.00 pass is good for one week.

What an incredilbe installation this must have been. Would have been great to see it fully functional in the day. I will email you the information. A side note to our visit was the I got a lifetime pass to any National Park or Area. For once it paid to be 62 years of age. Not a bad deal for just $2 more than the normal entrance. TFTH TFTC

Great location. We had both a good time and a challenge of our own. We were in such a rush to get the cache that I (BB2) forgot to turn the motorcycle off all the way and killed the battery. After a few attempts to push start it, we eventually found a park worker that had some jumper cables. Great place to eat on the way there ""PEG LEGS" was great. TFTC

We visited the gulf coast last weekend and stopped by for this virtual. We brought our bikes and decided to make the trip. As it turns out the recent hurricane activity has increased the length of the sand walk. We had anticipated one mile of sand walking each way, but it ended up being 3 miles each way. Still a great outing in a beautiful and quiet place. We enjoyed the adventure. Thanks for the virtual adventure. The e-mail with answer has already been sent.

I hate having to log a virtual as a DNF, but the road was closed when we got there. A local news reporter was nearby making a report on the rough surf and impending bad weather for the area, so we asked him about the road closing and he said the roads were badly eroded, and probably wouldn't be fixed again until after this hurrican season was over. We'll be back for another visit.

Hiked out to the fort from the gate at Parking Lot 20 on a hot day. It's incredible how quiet and abandoned everything seemed. Just about everything out there is still on generator power at the fort. A great trip if you can handle the 15 mile round trip hike.

My son (a young Marine in much better shape than his ol' mom) & I rode bikes out to the fort. My GPS recorded a little over 6 miles just to the gates. There was .7 mile of sand (no road) about 2 miles in, plus another 500' further up. To push bikes easier, go to the bay side and walk along the edges of the mud flats. Do not follow the poles the parks vehicles do (a mistake we made on the way out). There is also a short section of pavement still left about halfway through the .7 miles of sand. Take bug spray as the mosquitos are HORRIBLE! We couldn't even stop and we got swarmed immediatly. The CG is open to pack-in ($10). This is the only fee at this time. Answer has been sent.

Got it. The site is still a mess from Ivan. The road is totally destroyed after 2 or 3 miles and is missing for another mile after that. If you go there you better take enough drinking water with you, because its a long walk through the desert (7 miles), if you go there by bike, which i would recommend, keep in mind that you will have to carry or push it through at least a mile of sand. Although it might be possible to ride along the beach, the sand there seemed to be compacted enough.
The sites themself are in very good condition, even though the campground is closed and all facilities seem to be closed down as well.
Be sure to solve the Pensacola Batteries Cache as well, once you are there.

Visited this many many times. My boys love to run around chasing imaginary villains, and having gunfights. Dad likes it because even on a hot day, the underground hallways are cool. Did you know when the US captured Geronimo, he was held prisoner at Fort Pickens for a short time? A must see spot for anyone visiting Pensacola.

Was a little confused since I didn't have the cache description with me, since the gate obviously wasn't where the answer was. Enjoyed the self-guided tour - took me a while to get the answer, but that was part of the experience. Will combine answers with Batteries.

Sixth of nine found today while on vacation from Texas. I enjoyed the trip along the beach. The recent tropical storm sent water and sand over the road. It looked like I was driving through snow. I had my National Park Service annual pass with me, so I got in for free. I enjoyed the tour arond the fort and like the view.

Haven’t been to Ft. Pickens in many years. I used to go scuba diving on some old airplanes just west of the fort. There were many divers there today. Thanx for a reason to visit an old haunt.

Took the kayak to this one. It didn't take too long to paddle from the beach access at NAS Pensacola. I beached the kayak at the fishing dock on the north side of the Fort Pickens area and explored the Fort for about an hour. For lunch, I enjoyed some Lunchable crackers in the shade.

The fort was very interesting and I enjoyed walking around at my own pace before heading out via the water again in order to bag the Pensacola Battery cache to the east.

What a fort! Amazing - all that work and never a foreign attack!

Spent a few hours here looking around and exploring all the passages. Thought maybe we'd run into the ghost of Geronimo but that didn't happen.

Thanks for the great time!

Ahh, we did 9 for 9 today. Our cache caper ended here at Fort Pickens, an incredible spot rich in history and even on a wet day like this, attracting many visitors.

I know TarribleT and I will be returning, probably with family from out of state, to really explore this area.

Biloxi Nana and I went 9 for 9 today, with this cache being our last one. It was raining pretty good, but that's what foul weather gear is for. I'm just sorry we didn't get here early enough to really take the time to explore and enjoy this area. I will be back and know I can burn up at least 8 hours exploring. This park is not only in a beautiful setting, it is loaded with history. It is well worth the entrace fee. Thanks Breaktrack for posting the caches in this area.

Our 2nd of the day. After looking at all the coastal batteries we headed down the road to check out the fort itself and answer the question. Wow what a great place. My wife's aunt and I explored every nook and cranny we could get to (even the long narrow tunnels that ended suddenly for no reason. We think they may have been the latrines!). We stood on the walls and looked where the other Forts were (and still does) stand. We had a great day and I hope many other people get a chance to come out and see this Fort. It is a great place for kids, even a big kid like me!
