Geocache Description:

Description:
Mt. Cardigan is one of my favorite places to hike year round. Since I live within 15 minutes of Mt. Cardigan I hike it regularly and have hiked it hundreds of times. Of all the trails on Mt. Cardigan my favorite is the South Ridge trail from Rimrock to South Peak. While this is one of the less traveled trails, it is well worth it for the views it offers. The views from Rimrock are very nice as well as the view from South Peak to the fire tower. The view from South Peak to the fire tower also offers a view of the Warden’s cabin you can not get from any other trail.

Directions:
From the upper parking lot take the West Ridge trail .9 miles to the Skyland trail junction. From there take the Skyland trail .2 miles to Rimrock. From Rimrock take the South Ridge trail to South Peak. It is .3 miles from Rimrock to South Peak and the cache is about half way between the two. The cache is about 100 feet off the trail.

If this is your first time to Mt. Cardigan I would suggest continuing on to the fire tower, which is on the peak of Mt. Cardigan. From South Peak continue on the South Ridge trail to the Warden’s cabin. From there take the Clark trail to the fire tower. The hike from the Warden’s cabin to the fire tower is a steep one so be warned.

The cache is an ammo box with a geocache sticker on the outside. It contains a logbook and pencil as well as various items for trading.

Winter:
The road to the upper parking lot is not maintained for winter use and is blocked by a locked gate. So you will need to park at the lower parking lot located at N43º 38.734 W71º 56.629. It is .6 miles from the lower parking lot to the upper parking lot. The trail from the lower parking lot to the upper parking lot and the West Ridge trail from the upper parking lot to the fire tower are well traveled in the winter. So snow shoes are normally not required while on these trails. However, once you leave these well traveled trails you will want snow shoes. For those not use to mountain summits, be advised the wind is always blowing once you leave the tree line. With the hint this cache can even be found in deep snow.
