In the Amsterdamse Waterleiding Duinen (AWD) (Amsterdam Water Supply Dunes), south of Zandvoort and Haarlem and just 25 km west of Amsterdam. The AWD is the most quiet natural environment in the Netherlands! The AWD are unique in the west of the Netherlands.

Parking - Public Transport - Leisure
At the entrance there is a parking for cars, motors and bikes and it is easy to reach by public transport. Take the train to Haarlem or Heemstede/Aerdenhout and further by bus 90 of Connexxion, direction Den Haag. Take the busstop “Waterleiding/ Oase”. There is a nice bar/restaurant and a playground for children. You can find the Visitors' Centre Oranjekom just behind the entrance.

(children less than 8 years old free)
A dayticket for parking your car is 2 euro.
The most important factors for recreation in the Amsterdam Water Supply Dunes are quietness and space. The dunes are only accessible by foot and dogs or other pets are not allowed. To enter the dunes a small fee has to be paid. There are several walking paths through the dunes but people are also allowed to wander off the paths. To maintain the quality of experience, as few fences as possible are placed. The total walking area is 2900 ha. There is a small area (500 ha) that is not accessible because of trampling, disturbance and fragmentation of nature and water quality guarantee.

The AWD accommodate four functions: the two main functions are the production of drinking water and nature conservation, secondary functions are recreation and sea defence. From a landscape, cultural-historical and natural science point of view, the Amsterdam Water Supply Dunes is a dune area of exceptional value. More than 50% of Dutch flora is found in this area (from which 10% are only found in this area), as well as almost 60% of native mammals, including Roe and Fallow deer. There are over 100 subspecies of breeding birds present in the Amsterdam Water Supply Dunes, from which 40 are Red List species. The area forms a habitat for many animals: amphibians and reptiles (e.g. Sand Lizard), birds, mammals, butterflies, dragonflies (33 subspecies) and ground beetles. The dunes form an important stopover site for migratory birds on their routes along the Atlantic coasts. The landscape of the Amsterdam Water Supply Dunes shows a unique succession of different landscape zones. Every landscape type belongs to a specific period of existence. The landscape types vary from the Old Dunes with sandbanks to the young landscape types near the sea. Between these two types a series of habitats can be distinguished that become more mature towards the inner dunes (these are therefore less calcareous and more vegetated). Every landscape type has its own characteristic genesis, soil development and flora and fauna.

Preparation
The total walking distance, from entrance to cache and back, is about 7 km. You have to solve some easy questions while walking. It is easy walking except for the final part (200 m)where you can expect difficult terrain.


The Hunt

1. Go to the entrance of the AWD: N 52º 20.739´ E 04º 34.981´.


2. Walk to the road marker (paddestoel) ANWB 22010 and solve the questions below.

A = Distance to "Ingang de Oase"

B = Distance to “Ingang Vogelenzang”


3. Walk to: N 52º 20.396´ E 04º 34.573´


4. Go to the bench (bank) that overlooks the Oosterduinrel. This bench has a number.

C = First figure (cijfer) of the number of this bench

D = Second figure of the number of this bench


5. Continue your walk to a stone on N 52º 20.203´ E 04º 34.260´


6. Turn right (West) to the road marker (paddestoel) 22235 on N 52º 20.159´ E 04º 33.372’

Follow the arrow of your GPS. You will walk through a beautifull dune area. Do not climb fences.


7. With the help of the ANWB road marker, with number 22235, we will calculate the position of the OASE geocache.

E = The distance to “Marelberg” in kilometers (integer)

F = The distance to "Strand (Paal 69)" and back

Find the cache at: N 52º 2A.CDD´ E 04º 3B.DEF´
Terugweg
Wandel terug langs het water naar paddestoel 22167 op 52º 20.363´ E 04º 33.521´. Volg hier vandaan het water wat achter het schuilhuisje loopt terug naar ingang OASE. Kijk goed in het water; vooral bij dammetjes. Dit geldt eigenlijk voor alle watertjes in de AWD. Je kan hier snoeken zien van zeker 1 meter lengte !!!
