This cache has been placed in Alice Holt Forest on the Surrey
Hampshire border. The Forest is split in two by the A325. The cache
is located in the less commercialised west side. From the A325,
lookout for the large green “JCB Greenshield” signs on
a small road going west. Drive past the entrance to the Research
Centre and park at N 51º 11.018’ W 00º
51.220’. The rest is up to you and your GPSr.
Alice Holt Forest has a historical chronicle dating back to Roman
times. It’s wealth of natural resources such as clay and
timber made it an important centre of industry at that time.
During the Saxon era, Aelfsige Bishop of Winchester after whom this
cache is named, owned the forest and the area became known as
Aelfsige Holt.
Following the Norman Conquest, the forest became renowned as a
popular hunting ground for the new ruling elite. As time progressed
through the middle ages, an increasing number of its large oak
trees were consumed to supply raw materials for England’s
developing naval fleet.
This area continues to be a home to a wide variety of birdlife.
Green Woodpeckers and small falcons are among those that are
attracted by the abundance of pickings further down the food chain
in the nearby ponds.
The large Purple Emperor butterfly is also a resident and has
become the symbol for this woodland area. If you are searching for
the cache around dusk, you may be lucky enough to catch site of
Alice Holts shy Roe Deer.

January 24 by Bikehog (62 found) A dry day, with no snow for a change, so went out towards the end of the day, in the hope that there wouldn't be too many muggles about. The tree cover confused the GPS a bit, but by averaging out, and the "force", found the cache after about 10 minutes.Lots of goodies in the box, and now there is also the Dawn 2 Dusk Travel Bug, which I have dropped off. December 22, 2009 by andrewpeach (1 found) This was my first cache find and I'm still beaming about it. I actually had no idea geocaching existed until last week when I got myself an iPhone. Thumbing through the iPhone apps I found geocaching but decided not to purchase. That was last week. Then, yesterday it started snowing around where we live in Bentley. Consequently today I took a walk into nearby Alice Holt with a friend to check out the snow. As we walked I spoke about the coolness of the iPhone and some of the apps. I mentioned the geocache concept, and it was only at that point (in the snow covered forest) that I decided to download the geocache app. Firing it up, I discovered that the nearest geocache was only 263 feet away (seriously!) and so we both decided to go look for it! Sure enough a few minutes later we found it (with some help from the hint sentence) even though the entire area was thick with white snow! Good cache! Can't wait to find some more now!
