This is the most architecturally interesting station in the system. It is also the second oldest original station. The Santa Clara Station is older. The building was built in 1888 in the Richardsonian Romanesque Revival style. It is built out of Alamaden Sandstone, the same building stone used in building the Stanford Chapel.
Although it no longer can be proven it is believed that the architect was Charles Coolidge. Coolidge designed the Chapel in the same style and at about the same time using the same stone. The original blue prints were copied in the early 1900's because they were in bad shape. Unfortunately they didn't copy the architect's name or signature.
When the building was repaired in the 1980's the entire slate roof was replaced with new imported slate tiles. The only tiles the State could find were in Europe.
The offices for CalTrain are about 1.5 blocks away on San Carlos Av. Cross El Camino Real at the light.
The cache is visible from 10 feet away if you know what you are looking for. I wonder how long it will last?
Note: If your GPSr or maping software indicates that the cache is on the Train right-of-way it is incorrect.
This cache is also part of the CalTrain - Weekend Trains (GCJQMD) Multi-Cache.
