Geocache Description:

On the wild West Coast, 1.5 hours from carpark, 3.5 hours return.
Starts on a formed track, moves to beach, then inland through first grass and scrub, then bush, to end in delightful surroundings whith a surprising point of interest.

Drive to the end of Anawhata Road where It starts down a regular fully formed track, then goes up the beach, then inland through grass and scrub and finally regenerating bush alongside a small stream to a delightful setting where you will hopefully find the cache.

Keeping your GPS locked might be a problem at the cache site but see the encrypted advice if you have trouble.

Note: There is no cellphone coverage in the area you will be travelling to this cache. Please ensure someone knows where you are going and when you should be back. Allow a significant amount of time before sunset in reserve.

Park the car at: S 36° 55.549 E 174° 27.497
Photos/lookout from: S 36° 55.347 E 174° 27.453
Cross on to the beach at: S 36° 55.281 E 174° 27.322
Head inland at: S 36° 55.017 E 174° 27.154
Turn left at: S 36° 54.994 E 174° 27.326
Turn right upstream at: S 36° 54.776 E 174° 27.378

The latter section alongside the stream is not a real track as such, but is relatively easy to walk following the stream. It is necessary to cross the small stream several times but this is easily accomplished.

Access to this section is by kind permission of the private owners and they request walkers follow the suggested route up the beach and keep clear of their dwelling (Which you will likely not even see).

The middle section is rather overgrown with some cutty grass and a little gorse so gaiters might be an idea. The route is not recommended for mountain bikes.

If you have trouble with maintaining lock you may get position S 36° 54.554 E 174° 27.578 on the top of a large rock then use the clue.

The cache is a plastic jar in a black plastic bag and initially contained various items including 1 mouse house (can easily be converted, with minor trimming, to house a Garmin 72 or 76 series GPS).
