Geocache Description:

A walk around Fair Head with stunning views of the north coast cliffs and Rathlin Island.

Take the A2 coastal route towards Murlough Bay. Park at the picnic site/Carpark just above Murlough Bay. Follow the marked path.

The path is marked with yellow circles and is best done in an anti-clockwise direction. Around the the area of the crannog, the path can be hard to locate. A map and compass will make it easier but if you don't have one, just head in the rough direction of the carpark. If you don't fancy your chances doing this just back track and retrace your steps to the start.

At the northern end of the path lies Fair Head. The area is flanked by steep cliffs. Where the path leads down to the sea is called Grey Mans path. Here there is a large stone pillar known locally as the Grey Man. To the east of the pillar is a large rectangular boulder which is known by some locals as the Grey Mans Head.

The walk is over damp uneven grazing land and you will have to jump bogs ,streams and even climb over stiles. Wear appropriate clothes and sensible shoes/boots. Don't leave the trail or venture too near to the cliffs. Dogs should not be taken on this trip.

The walk will take you near to an island shelter in the centre of Lough na Crannagh. This is a CRANNOG, a fortified island used as a shelter in times of danger. The crannog is believed to be over a 1000 years old. It is created by extending an existing island with a dry stone wall.
