The 3rd oldest lighthouse in America, Beavertail marks the entrance to Narragansett Bay and offers a superb ocean view in one of Rhode Island's prettiest settings. Highly recommended for those visiting from out of state. Erosion has affected trails and steps leading to the ocean.; again, EXERCISE CARE NEAR THIS LOCATION DUE TO COASTAL EROSION. NOTE - new cache placed 7-22-22 at top left of stone steps. Didn't find old cache so that may still be around.
Bring a picnic and /or your bike to this historic and beautiful site, but also bring a warm jacket, 'cause it's always windy and blowing off the ocean. The present light dates back to 1856, but there have been watch houses and lights at this spot since 1705. This was a very important shipping beacon in colonial times, as Newport was at that time a major commercial and trading port. Visit the museum in the lighthouse for some interesting history of this spot. Several other caches are close by and worthy of a visit, with historic ties to WWII, right here on Jamestown, and there are many caches in nearby Newport Please be discrete looking for cache - this can be a busy place in nice weather. Watch your step!!! If you're from out of state on a visit also stop in downtown Jamestown. The island is what Cape Cod once used to be but isn't anymore, so it's worth the trip.
