Loudville is a small village located where the towns of Southampton, Easthampton, Northampton and Westhampton meet.At one time it was a busy mining village and the site of what is said to have once been the largest lead mine in the U.S. Galena was first discovered here in 1679 and by Revolutionary War times the mine was producing large quantities of lead for bullets. Besides the lead, each ton of Galena from this vein also produced about 12.5 ounces of silver. Other minerals still being found here are: Barite, Fluorite,Galena, Malacite, Pyromorphite, Quartz, Sphalerite and Wulfenite. This information was taken from "Minerals and rocks of Springfield and Vicinity" by Leo Derwood Otis 1952. Collecting is still being done today on both sides of the river. Follow old mining road down to river, trails to right lead to dug up areas. Continue following road to cache. Cache container is a 3.5x7x10 inch ammo can.
