Nordic wolfsbane, Lehtoukonhattu, Aconitum lycoctonum
The Nordic Wolfsbane, a very poisonous herb that grows over two meters high, is one of the few very tall grasses in Finland. The Nordic Wolfsbane grows in Finland as an original plant only in the Central Carelian groves in Kitee and Tohmajärvi. The Nordic Wolfsbane is flowering in late June – early July. In Kirkkoniemi Tohmajärvi there is a nature trail called Aconitum-kierros (Aconitum trail) through the Aconitum grove area. On this trail you can make yourself acquainted with the history of the area, the geology and the flora and the fauna (the information is only in Finnish). The total length of the trail is about six km but you can take only part of it.
The parking place is at N 62 11.652 E 30 22.664. The nature trail is found just the opposite side of the old cemetery. It is about one kilometer from the parking place to the cache.
The cache is about 35 meters off the Aconitum-trail and couple of hundred meters off the nature preservation area. The hiding place is obvious when you get near.
When visiting the cache you may visit the old church nearby (built in 1756).
Lehtoukonhattu, yli kaksimetriseksi kasvava hyvin myrkyllinen leinikkikasvi, on maamme harvoja todella kookkaita suurruohoja. Ukonhattua esiintyy maassamme alkuperäisenä vain Keski-Karjalan lehtokeskuksessa Kiteellä ja Tohmajärvellä.
Ukonhattu kukkii kesä-heinäkuun vaihteessa. Tohmajärven Kirkkoniemessä sijaitsevan, suojellun ukonhattulehdon läpi on rakennettu luontopolku, Aconitum-kierros. Polulla voit tutustua sekä Kirkkoniemen historiaan että alueen maaperään ja muuhun rikkaaseen eläimistöön ja kasvistoon opastaulujen avulla. Reitin kokonaispituus on n. 6 km, mutta sen voi myös jakaa lyhyempiin osiin.
Pysäköintipaikka on esimerkiksi N 62 11.652 E 30 22.664. Luontopolku kulkee pysäköintipaikalta katsottuna vanhan hautausmaan takana. Pysäköintialueelta on noin kilometrin matka kätkölle.
Kätkö on Aconitum-polulta sivussa (noin 35 m), pari sataa metriä suojelualueen ulkopuolella. Piilopaikka on selkeä, kun pääset lähelle.
Samalla kun käyt kätköllä, kannattaa tutustua lähellä olevaan vanhaan kirkkoon (rakennettu 1756).
