Geocache Description:

Joe Earle, killed by Indians in 1878, was the first man buried in the Quanah Cemetery. He was killed by Comanche Indians in the ravine just east of where the cemetery is located near the Railroad tank.

He and two companions were traveling in a covered wagon, Earle was walking some distance ahead of the wagon when the Indians suddenly appeared on the scene, cut Earle off from the wagon and killed him. While killing and scalping Earle, his companions cut the horses loose from the wagon and made good their escape to the old R2 ranch near the present city of Chillicothe.

Earle’s body was buried by the cowboys near where he was killed. Years later when Quanah was first located, the first of the dead were buried near Earle’s grave and the locality is now the city cemetery.

The death and burial preceded the town's formation, thus Quanah had a cemetery before there was a town.

*Quanah Chief (October 6, 1892)
