Geocache Description:

Directions: From Townsend (MA) center head north on route 13 towards Brookline and Milford NH. The entrance to the main driveway, trails, and parking area is at N42 43.688 W071 39.828. Open dawn to dusk.

Big Bear Mountain is a former ski area on Pontanipo Hill whose paths and runs have been converted into multi-use trails. It is open year round for hiking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing.

The area is the home to the Andres Institute of Art (www.andresinstitute.org) that has commissioned many sculptures scattered throughout the property (see pictures below). You can get a trail map at the parking area which shows the names and locations of the sculptures.

The cache is not hard to find so take the time to wander about and see all of the works of art in this unique place. The trails are fairly steep at first but then level off somewhat. Bring a lunch and enjoy a picnic at the top. There is also a letterbox nearby that you may want to search for.

The cache is a Tupperware container with a blue trimmed lid. Original contents are: logbook and pen, finder’s stickers (take one as souvenir), FBI pencil sharpener, parachutist, nerf golf ball, Spiderman toy, Star Wars card game and Where's George dollar.

PLEASE NOTE: Although the trails are public property, the studio and houses near the summit are not. Please respect the privacy of these residents. The trails will bring you to within 100 yards of the cache. Also there are trails that radiate from the summit in all directions. It is theoretically possible to skimobile from Potanipo Hill all the way to northern Canada! (Thanks to zoward for the updated information).
