Geocache Description:

Located near the Mule Peak Lookout, a working Forest Service fire lookout at 8142' elevation, within the Giant Sequoia National Monument.

One way to approach is from Western Divide Highway, turn on Forest Service Road 22S03 at N35 59.835 W118 34.874.

4 wheel drive not necessary, but an SUV or pickup is helpful on the dirt road. We have seen passenger cars in the parking area. It's about a 3/4 mile hike uphill to the top. Please, no motorcycles or ATVs on the hiking trail.

Keep an eye on children, and bring your own drinking water. There are NO public restrooms nearby. There are some dropoffs on top...IT'S THE TOP OF A MOUNTAIN!

The ranger that works at the lookout takes their job seriously. They are typically busy monitoring radio traffic, speaking to ground firecrews, aircraft, and keeping a watchfull eye on the surrounding forest. His main job is NOT to give you a tour.

If time permits, they are usually happy to give you a brief look inside their "office". Approach the building, wait at the bottom of the stairs, and call out to the lookout inside. Please don't cross the barrier until instructed to do so.

It has become tradition to take the lookout a snack when you visit: nuts, fruit, cookies, juice, etc. Hope you enjoy this view as much as we do.

Roads in area are closed in winter due to snow to all vehicles except snowmobiles.
