Warning

Please note: To use the services of geocaching.com, you must agree to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

Trail is gravel and small rocks, easy to follow. Up-hill hike. Cache is only a few feet off the trail, so it should be easy to find.
Park at N 42° 59.628, W 71° 20.580. Trail starts diagnally across the road at a well marked gate.

Cache is fairly well hidden, but only a few feet off the trail near the top of the hill. When you get near the area of the cache, you'll understand why this is called the "auburn stairs cache". There was once a fire tower on the top of the hill many years ago. There is private property nearby at the top of the hill.

Cache contents when started:

Silly putty
blaster balls
drink cooler/carrier
hands free cell phone kit (nokia)
keychain flashlight
mini-fan
mini-tape measure keychain
mini playing cards.

(also dropped a travel bug in the cache)

Found about 50' North from where my GPS said it should be, but once I had the right sight angle, it was a quick find. Loved the Murphy's Irish Stout coaster left a bit ago, (Being one myself).

Beautiful area, but alas, I didn't see any turkeys guarding the steps.

Found after a short search. Was going to go up the staircase BUT that darn Turkey was must of been trying to impress his flock of Mrs. Turkeys because he was not stopping his strutting. My son and I met up with about a dozen Turkeys one day and the two Males were trying to be the best infront of all the females. Impressive sight. So that's why we opted not to even attempt to bother them.

Found cache quickly and as I was signing log I heard a wild turkey close by. I finished signing, replaced cache and started up the stairs then heard the turkey again too nearby. With that I left and was bushwacking back down and met up with 76-CJ7. I love meeting fellow cachers on the trail and after several emails back and forth with them it was great to meet them on the trail. I got some handy tips that I hope to use very soon.

Decided to give this one a shot today. Although the cache is not that far from the parking, I am terribly out of shape and had to stop several times to catch my breath. And walking on rocks hidden under leaves can add to the adventure.

Found the cache based upon the hint. GPS had me about 75' away. Walked up the stairs keeping the Private Property signs on my left until I got closer to the top. At that point I decided I better head back down.

Dropped A New Star is Born geocoin and took some pictures. TFTC

Hi All; Out after work to grab a few caches. This cache had me tuckered out. As I had already walked about 2 miles on some previous caches. Anyway's, There was an awesome sunset and the bugs were not to bad. At the cache I took a water bottle and left a hotwheel. Thanks for the stair cache. And I thought the stairs were the switch back fire lane to the cache.

TFTC. What a great cache, fun walk in. It was a little bit of a tough walk, this being the 6th cache of the day (plus 1 hour spent not finding Bug Off). Parking area is marked with a sign, Shore Dr., high on a sign across the street from the trail head. Left a new Zip-Lock bag for the Log and a mechanical pencil. Also left Handcuffs Geocoin. This was one of our favorite coins we have found. Hope someone moves it along soon. Took Joe Smurf Snowboarder.

For a cache that's been around for a few years, this sure hasn't seen much activity lately...and that's a shame.

Fed up with following footprints to caches, I wanted to walk a path less travelled and came by here tonight as it hadn't had a visitor in over two months. I followed a beautiful, gentle trail up, well-packed by snowmobiles. The walk was a bit over a third of a mile, very relaxing and quiet. With snow covering the ground and no footprints to give anything away, the search was *fun*, although the coordinates had me 50-60 feet from where I finally found the cache. I didn't care: the woods were completely silent and beautiful. My one regret was that I couldn't make out the "steps" with their snow cover. I'll definitely be back in the warmer weather!

When I was done, I switched off my headlamp and listened to nothingness for a few minutes, then kept it off as I made the return hike in the dark, guided only by the whiteness of the trail. Thanks for the cache, the unexpected area, and the excellent adventure!

162 of 166: Enjoyed this hike to the tower foundation. The stairs were great. I tried to bolt up over them but I was wheezing pretty good about 2/3rds to 3/4ths of the way up. The view from the top was nice. It would have been great if a little more of the lake was visible in the open. The cache was a little tricky to locate. I kept losing a signal lock. Then I saw in the paper log someone found it without a GPSr. Nice! TNLN, TFTC

Even though we tried to find this cache on a very hot summer day,we were surprised how relatively easy and pain free it turned out to be. Maybe the breeze and the quality of DEET had something to do with it. A nice, big cache, and in good dry shape. Thank you, ducky189 & c5b.
We dropped TB Dino, took the magnet and left 3 CITO Kits, thereby earning another brownie point at this cache: "Fold Bags to help Trash Out" by Inventor. We thought this was a neat idea and went and prepared a dozen of those kits.

Today a fierce battle was waged at the foot of the site of the Auburn Stairs. A well meaning traveler from a distant land began his quest to visit the treasure near the stairs and was immediately harrased by small bands of tiny evil forest creatures. As long as he was moving the evil creatures found it difficult to keep his pace, but when he stopped for any reason they fell upon him in large numbers. Nevertheless he persevered until the site was gained. As he searched for the treasure the evil army fell upon him. At one point it appeared they might drive him off, but his persistence was finally rewarded but not until both sides had suffered many wounds and fierce casualties. After viewing the treasure, the traveler climbed the stairs hoping to be rewarded with a pleasant view, but, alas this was not to be as the tower at the summit has been replaced by a private castle.

Don't forget you bug spray or you many suffer the same fate. Co ords seemed a bit off, but during the running battle who can be sure. SFOR 9. Thanks for the hide ducky189 & c5b

This cache hunt ended up much more exciting than I had expected. The stroll up to step was peaceful enough. I took a "poor girl" bottle cover and I left a jefferson. However, as I walked back to the parking area, I saw many emergency vehicle pulling into the very same place. I was much afeared for the capybaronial Cooper (fortunately, it was safe and sound). The rescue folks were rather preoccupied, so I am still curious what the emergency was.

Out of the pink and into the auburn.
The hike wasn't so hard but it was a bit uphill. Then we started an uphill battle. We searched in the wrong area around the zero point and, fortunately, I was wandering afield when Flask read the hint (to herself). I found it almost immeadiately after she ruled herself out of the search so it didn't use much more time. I am kind of sorry we didn't continue up the stairs but there isn't much daylight to burn now.
I took the Flash toy (longtime fan of the comic) and Aladdin and left TX dope (you'll see) and a North Sky geotoken.
And then the questions.

I don't meet other cachers very often, but very glad to meet the Screamapillars and their dogs. My GPS was a long way off going uphill. After a trip to the former tower site and return, it had settled down.

Second of the day. The dogs ran up the hill, down the hill, up again, halfway down, up again... I think for every step we humans made, they took five.

At the top, we met Bushwhack Bob, who had gone up higher to seek a view and the cache. With Bob, we searched until cache was in hand. Geoff took some Alien thingie, Doug took a finger monster, and we left playdoh.

Left with Bushwhack Bob to go do another cache. Thanks for the hide!

Whew, the mosquitoes were out tonight. Signed the log quickly and I didn’t stay long at the cache site because of them. The breeze and the view at the top of the hill were a welcome treat. TNLN TFTC

Stopped by here on my way home from work. I only used my GPS to get me pointed up the correct trail, once I was close I found the cache with just the hint. (After looking in the other obvious, but wrong, place -- like a lot of other people.)

This completes the Massabesic Caches for me -- at least the ones I can walk to. This is a great area!

I've been by this spot few times before. View from the spot of the old tower is great.
The 'squitoes were ferrocious, even with Deep Woods Off.
Nice hide and close to the trail too.

Very nice cache, and a good workout. Ironically, I thought the parking area was as nice as the cache area. Good hide, too. The skeeters were REALLY tough (hence my short log sign-in), but it was a very nice cache The caches namesake was a bit of a surprise. Took the now rescued Georgia Raisin - Bowtie bug, left a Seattle Seahawks golfball. Thanks, Bill the Sox Fan

This was a very good cache area, as noted in previous log about the water, it was gone when we arrived, maybe dried up.We found this at 12:55 pm, an it was an easy cache. Except for the fact that the wind was picking up an it got a bit frilly on the face. Thanks for the hunt, an cache.

A beautiful Sunday morning, crisp cool and sunny. This was a very pleasant walk and I continued to the summit to catch the view of the lake. I enjoyed the view but was surprised to find a house up there. It took away the serenity of a beautiful spot. I took the travel bug and left a NH pocket guide to animal tracks. Thanks for the hunt. Parked by the lake across from the gate. Snowmobiles packed down the trail, places were slippery. A aerobic workout going up! Kept thinking of richcot coming down this hill on cross country skis, yikes!! Found the cache using the above coords from a previous cacher. The container is FULL of nice toys and in good shape. Took a keyring and left a car. Continued to the top of the hill hoping for a good view of the lake, but there are too many trees. TFTC.

The snowmobiles groomed this mountain trail very well. Finding this well hidden cache was the most challenging cache for us so far. Saw a lot of animal tracks and freshly dug holes in the snow but no wildlife.

Took: Daisy duck doll
Left: Sunday River sticker and our names

Thanks for making #8 our hardest find yet.

after getting three of the caches on massabesic lake, i just barely made it to the stairs. it was dark when i got to the area. found it without too much trouble. i'm lucky i did. i had low batteries and no light. the trip down was the funnest part. i don't think you're supposed to go that fast on cross-country skis. but, i made it down in one piece. thanks for the cache!

Couldn't find anything that looked like a parking area at the parking coords. Found an alternate entrance at the gated road across from the parking area down next to the lake though. Perfect day for a walk through the woods. At 50 degrees it felt like a spring day! Cache coords seems off a bit, but it could have been the tall pines.

Very interesting place I might never have discovered on my own. Left two monsters, took handcuffs and a geode. Great fun, thanks!

Perhaps we didn't find the correct place to park, but N 42 59.656' W 071 20.543 (with 6 satellites strong signals) seemed to match the description. We wandered through the forest, taking a scenic route in, still only logging .8 miles round-trip. We took a teacher appreciation Eartgh ball, bungee cord and Yu-Gi-Oh cards, and lerft a rubberband frog, piglet, big popper, red alligator keychain flashlight, break-your-own geode, circus whistle, Daisy Duck figure and a DragonBall-Z character. Thanks for the hide. Tough to get good signals at the exact site, hence the modified coords.

I dont know if they were wrong in my GPS or if the coords were wrong for the parking spot but they seemed way off. I found the cache without much difficulty but like others before me I found the coords to be off to. I TNLN. Thanks for a nice little hike that ended with some wet snow coming down, and a total of 10 caches found on this day. Thanks again.

This is our second find. We were with team Just Jacks - we have yet to buy a GPS. Had a great time - nice hike on trails on which we usually bike. Had a little trouble finding the parking coordinates, but we were familiar with the entry gate so we knew where to go. Didn't have anything to trade so we just logged our visit with JJ.

Arrived @ 11:10am. 2nd of 5 caches today. I also had trouble with the parking coords; I parked across from the gate @ N42 59.649, W71 20.563. The cache coords were a little off; I got N42 59.467, W71 20.205. Beautiful day! I took the keychain spotlight, and left a pocket digital recorder (needs a battery, but works quite well). Thx, Dean Owens

I could not find the parking area and gate listed. I parked across from the gate at Massebesic Lake at 59.669 - 20.555. This worked quite well. I was able to find the cache, but I also had different coordinates. My GPS held steady at the site at 59.465 - 20.207. I took a tape measure key chain and left a yellow toy car.

It was a nice climb up the stairs to the fire road and old tower site.

I found it, but got different coordinates on my GPS. I won't say these recorded here are wrong, as my GPS jumped from .461 to .467 Northly (never reached as far north at .477) and from .199 to .214 Westerly, all while I STANDING STILL right there at the cache site.

Anyway, I took some kid toys, I left some kid toys, plus I left an electronic calendar (new in box) and a bookcrossing book: The Unvanquished by William Faulkner. Please journal it at bookcrossing.com if you take it. (Thanks.)

It was a nice hike up the hill on a beautiful day. Got some much needed alone time. And the exercise didn't hurt either. Thanks.

Ryans_geopirates were here!!!

We're off work this week, so a cache 5 miles from home is too good to pass up. Ryan found this one, it was his first FIRST. He took the sillyputty I took the TB. Left a couple of HappyMeal toys a NH quarter and a crazybone I think. Nice hide, quick find. We concentrated too hard on the wrong area first. Then Ryan pulled it out. I didnt find parking @ your coords(maybe I put them in wrong) I parked at the end of Shore Rd Right on Chester Rd There was a gate here too. Followed GPS in. The coords I had put me closer to the playground but I couldnt see a gate.

Thanx for the hide
