A kid friendly cache along the Cape Cod Rail Trail on the
Wellfleet/Eastham town line.
The medic kids wanted to place a cache but they wanted one that
kids could find without having to hunt for hours. They selected an
area the Cape Cod Rail Trail a few miles from their grandparents
house so that we could visit often and maintain the cache. In the
late 19th and early 20th century the best way to get to Cape Cod
was by train. The train from Boston all the way out to the tip of
the Cape at Provincetown. As with most trains the tracks are laid
on relatively flat ground with only a slight grade, usually less
than 5%, and with gentle curves. As in many areas rail service has
faded into history long ago leaving abandon railroad tracks that
pass through some very beautiful areas that are still worth looking
at.A number of years ago the Commonwealth of Massachusetts began to
purchase these stretches of abandon railroad track to convert it to
a bicycle trail. Since then the Cape Cod Rail Trail has become very
popular not only with bicyclists but also with walkers, joggers,
and rollerbladers. The cache is in an ammo box and is EXACTLY 100
miles from Boston if you follow the old rail line. It contains a
number of kids toys, a first aid kit, a pair of AA batteries and
the Medic 13 Travel Bug. The cache also contains a camera to take a
picture of your party and a log book to sign. The best way to reach
the cache is by bicycle starting anywhere along the Trail from
Orleans to Wellfleet and taking a nice ride. However, for those who
only want a short walk or ride you can park at N 41 51.867 W 069
58.967 and be very close to the cache location. From the cache
location you are also within an easy bicycle ride of the Marconi
Virtual Cache and 2 Traditional Caches in Nickerson State
Park.
Note as of 6-8-04 The cache is now in a 1 gallon black "Cache-Can"
after the ammo box was stolen. I am hoping that this will last a
little longer than the ammo box did. The cache location is not as
green as it used to be and if that continues hiding the cache will
be extremely difficult. I'll keep my eye on it and if the cover
gets to thin I may have to temporarily disable or archive the
cache.
