Warning

Please note: To use the services of geocaching.com, you must agree to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

The relatively high marks for difficulty and terrain are due to the location. The road may require a 4x4 during the wetter parts of the year and can be heavily rutted during the dry time. The elevation is around 3400 feet. Please go prepared. It can be very hot in the summer and cold in the winter. Taking along water is a must any time of the year.
As of May 2008 the whole Clear Creek OHV area is closed and the gates are locked. I know the State Park Rangers are patrolling. I will try to figure out what to do about this cache but not knowing the future of the area makes it difficult. For the time being I think this cache should be considered unreachable.

Level_1

The cache is located within view of the old mining town of New Idria. New Idria was a booming quicksilver or mercury mine during the early to mid 1900's. There are few residents there now and most of the town is posted so please respect the signs if you go through the town. New Idria is not the middle of nowhere but I've heard you can see it from there. The cache can be reached from the east and west. A full gas tank would be a bonus when leaving the beaten path for this cache.

The cache is a green ammo can. I'm sorry but I really can't remember all of the stuff in the cache. It's the journey that you will remember anyway.

Worry not--this cache is well outside the still-closed Clear Creek OHV area. It was a good mile of hiking before I reached the Clear Creek gate. Just to double-check, I overlayed the closure map on Google Earth, along with the waypoints of the three caches in the area, and this cache is unambiguously outside the closure area. Don't believe the hype!

The clue threw me off (that's what I get for cheating from the start), but found the cache in good order. The cache area was covered in snow, but the cache itself was easy to access without any digging (happily).

Nice view of the New Idria town from up here, nice spot. Found the cache with no trouble. TNLNSL.

Note: Evidently the the BLM has closed from New Idria up to here, but we saw no signs. The 'road closed' signs have been torn down, according to a friendly rancher we met up here. Check the Hollister BLM web site about the road closure.

Wow, this is a really tough dirt road to manuver. Very nice cache. Beautiful view, could see the Sierras. Definately worth it!

I now have my own account, so I'm logging the caches that I found with my Dad "pascochris" since 2005.
