3-D Triangulation in Poci Multi-cache

This cache has been archived.

georapper: this cache is way to hard for anyone in southeast idaho. a 4-
D cache is out of the question. it took someone from out of state to solve this cache. of course, i expect nothing less from a bunch of hillbillies

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO FIND THIS CACHE AT THE COORDINATES LISTED: This is not just another cache, its an adventure. This multi-cache will provide 4 known points and distances in 3 Dimensions to an unknown, hidden cache. You will need to triangulate the position of the unknown cache location.

1. Position 1, 12T E385314 N4742926, Elevation 0km, distance from hidden cache, 2km
2. Position 2, 12T E385314 N4742926, Elevation 4km, distance from hidden cache, 3km
3. Position 3, 12T E383314 N4744926, Elevation 2km, distance from hidden cache, 3 km
4. Position 4, (i.e. unknown at time of posting) distance from hidden cache will be posted in this microcache.

An Application note that explains how to solve this can be downloaded in Word format at the bottom of this description.Download the Closed Form Solution Application Note for details.

Coordinate axis used: ECEF X,Y,Z Coordinate System

Translate the origin to the intersection of the Prime Meridian and Equator, use Z axis for North, Y axis for East and X axis for elevation.

Since this is a 3D cache, you will need the elevation as well as the UTM surface coordinates to find the solution. if the cacher has completed the 2D Triangulation cache in Poci, or the Epicenter cache by RK, the method of solving for this cache will be more easily understood.

Another similar cache developed as an offshoot variation of this cache is listed as Suspended between Benchmarks This is an excellent application of 3D triangulation that uses benchmarks.

This cache will require an initial test phase. Send the owner the 2 quadratic solutions before attempting to find the microcache at position 4. This could be solved graphically though more difficult than the 2D triangulation and not as accurate.

Since this is a rappelling required cache, if you don't want to rappel, send me a picture of the location showing me the cache, then you can log it. DO NOT put the location of the cache or your picture in your log, email the picture.
