Ma and Pa Stanford's Old Red Barn Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Krypton: As there's been no response to my previous note, I assume that the cache is not going to be repaired or replaced, so I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace the cache sometime in the future, just contact us, and assuming it meets the guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it

Thanks for your cooperation!

Geocache Description:

A very close offset cache to honor Stanford's pastoral roots.

Stanford University's nickname is "The Farm", one of the legacies of its founders. By the 1870's, Leland Stanford had already made his fortune in the railroads--as the chairman of the Central Pacific Railroad, it was he who drove (and kept) the Golden Spike, completing the Transcontinental Railroad. (You can see the spike on display in the Stanford Museum on campus.) Stanford had also served as both governor and senator of California.

The Palo Alto Stock Farm, which ultimately became the site of the university, was a product both of his wealth and his widespread interests. It was not only a massive estate, but also a world-famous breeding lab for trotters, horses bred specifically to pull carriages. In this era before the advent of the automobile, Stanford was convinced that careful breeding of these horses to be better, stronger and faster would lift the economy of the nation by speeding transportation.

The red barn is one of the few pre-University buildings left on campus, and is simultaneously a still-working barn (the Athletics Department uses it for equestrian classes and events) and monument to the university's past. Amazingly, at one time this was one of nine similar barns on the farm.

You'll find the spot nestled among the holes of the Stanford golf course, but you don't need to (and shouldn't) go on the course. Parking on campus is generally restricted to permit holders and quarter plunkers from 6 AM to 4 PM, M-F, so bring some quarters just in case.

The first three (!) cache containers I placed here went MIA, so I've relocated its replacement to a slightly less trafficked spot in the same area, turning this into an offset cache in the process. To find the goodies, head 200 feet at 357 degrees (with magnetic north as reference) from Electioneer's nose. (Coordinates are 37 25.547/122 11.095)
The cache is a camo'ed plastic biscotti jar. Enjoy!
