Sunnyvale Public Library Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

WeBeDnD: I won't have time in the forseeable future to do the additional library research necessary to maintain this cache, and I don't think it's fair to ask anyone to visit multiple libraries to get the last part of the puzzle as it is written. So the cache has been removed.

Geocache Description:

A micro cache, sign only, bring your own pen.

Posted coordinates are the library parking lot, not the cache site. You must use 3 library resources to determine the actual cache location. That may limit the times during which you can solve the puzzle, but it does not limit your access to the cache itself. The cache is not in the library. Some of the library resources you'll need to use are of interest to inventors, and we are pretty sure all the resources will be of interest to geocachers.

Do the work below to determine the cache location. In doing the research, you might get a little extra help as to what to look for at the cache site if you are paying attention.

Actual coordinates for the cache are N37 22.xxx W122 02.yyy.

xxx = A + B
yyy = G - H + I

First resource: The Catalog.
Use the library catalog to find a book titled "Understanding GPS: principles and applications". The book has a Dewey Decimal number (the catalog may use the term "Branch/Location number") associated with it. Subtract the first 3 digits of the Dewey Decimal number from the last 3 digits; the result is (A). (Web alternative: Use the SPL Online Catalog [http://library.ci.sunnyvale.ca.us/]. Search for the title and use what they refer to as the 'Call Number'.)

Second resource: The SCi3 Cassis2 system.
Use the SCi3 Cassis2 system, Trademarks BIB, to search for Wordmark "GPS". Select the entry with registration number 1887025, serial number 74514382. Determine the wordmark type for that entry. If this mark is a "Service mark" then (B) = 160, if it is a "Trade mark" then (B) = 60. (Web alternative: Go to the US Patent & Trademark Office [http://www.uspto.gov/] and use the Trademarks Search feature to find the "Type of Mark".)

Third resource: The Gazette.
Use the hardbound printed version of the "Official Gazette of the US Patent and Trademark Office" to find patent number 4522443. The page number it is found on is (G). Use the SCi3 Cassis2 system, Patents BIB, to find the same patent number. The last three numbers in the "Issue date" is (H). (Note: dates are formatted as YYYYMMDD in the Cassis2 system.) If the patent holder's address of record is west of the Missippi River, (I) = 101. If it is east, (I) = 201. (There are some web alternatives for finding 'G', but they're messier. Besides, the point is to get you to use the library! It's a wonderful place, the people are really helpful, and books don't go off-line like web servers sometimes do. If you really really want to do this whole puzzle online, you'll have to figure out this step on your own.)

Have fun!

3/25/04: Updated the cache with some web resources. We still encourage you to use the library resources, even if it's only to use their readily available internet access.
10/15/03: Apologies and congratulations to all who sought/found the cache before this date, when the puzzle was too complicated and problematic.
