Puzzle Of The Century Multi-cache

This cache has been archived.

TheAdventurers: It is with sadness that I archive this cache, it was one of my favorites when we originally solved it so many years ago. I have enjoyed maintaining it ever since I adopted it. Unfortunately at a couple of stages, including the final, construction and maintenance have encroached on the hiding spots. That coupled with the fact that none of the stages follow the current guidelines of getting permission from property owners to place the hide, it is time to archive this cache. It has been a great one. And in keeping with the Leave No Trace motto, all stages have been collected and removed. Thank you all who have enjoyed this cache. Also, to all those who have left favorite points for this cache please feel free to take them back and give them to some other deserving active cache - it won't hurt my feelings one bit. Cache on!

Geocache Description:

A month or so before hiding this cache I reached my century cache (100th) and looked around to see if there was one nearby dedicated to such an event. Since there wasn't one, I decided to hide one for fellow cachers that are approaching their 100th, 200th, 300th, etc. finds. You don't *have* to be on a century find to log it, but it’ll be great to get as many century finds as possible.

This is a multi-stage cache and the first stage is NOT at the posted coordinates. To find the first stage you'll first have to solve several puzzles. The answers will be used in the formula below to get you to the first stage. This 5 stage multi-cache will take you on a 7 mile drive, so plan on spending a little time.

FIRST STAGE (the puzzles)

1) What is the product of the following series: (x-a), (x-b), (x-c)… (x-z)?
The answer is G.

2) Consider a long straight road with two cars 100 miles apart driving towards each other. The left car drives at a speed of forty mph and the right car at a speed of sixty mph. The cars are moving when the puzzle starts, and do not change their velocities until they crash in a head on collision that might kill both drivers unless something saves them. Superfly starts at the same location as the right car and flies at a speed of 80 mph towards the left car (pretty fast for a fly, but this is Superfly!). When it reaches the left car it instantly turns around and heads back towards the right, and when it reaches the right car again it instantly turns around and heads to the left, etcetera. Eventually the cars meet head on and squish Superfly and both drivers die. Superfly is really fast, but as it turns out he's not that strong. The Question: How many miles has Superfly traveled at the moment he's squished?
The answer is B.

3) How many of each animal did Moses take on the Ark with him?
The answer is E.

4) How many 3-cent stamps are there in a dozen?
The answer is DF.

5) As I was traveling to St. Ives, I met a man with seven wives. Each wife had seven sacks, each sack had seven cats, each cat had seven kits. Kits, cats, sacks, wives, how many times have the Atlanta Falcons won the Super Bowl?
The answer is O.

6) Water boils at J° on the Réaumur temperature scale.

7) 01111010011001010111001001101111 = C.

8) -.. --- ..- -... .-.. . --.. . .-. --- = AH.

9) A man leaves home, goes a short distance and turns left. He then proceeds another short distance and turns left again. He goes another short distance, and then goes home. When he's almost home how many masked men does he see waiting for him?
The answer is K.

I = J - B

N = F - K

Now substitute the answers into the following coordinates:
N34 GE.OCA W84 CH.ING

You can check your answers for this stage on Geochecker.com.

This will take you to the second stage that is definitely a drive by.

SECOND STAGE - Painted Numbers

What you’re looking for is a series of four numbers that are painted near the ground in front of the coordinates. You don’t even have to leave your car to see them. The actual cords are located on private property; please do not enter the private property.

Now take the four digit number, WXYZ, and substitute the numbers into the following coordinates.

THIRD STAGE - The real fun begins
N33° [W+X][W+W+Y].[W+Y][X-W][W+X]
W83° 59.[Y-X][W+W+Y][W+W]

You can check your answers for this stage on Geochecker.com.

FOLLOWING STAGES (3 thru 6)

The rest of the cache is a normal multi stage (4 more stops), ending with a container full of trade items and a log book.

PLEASE NOTE: The area for Stage 5 is no longer Geocache inhabitable, take the coordinates you found at Stage 4 and subtract 0.732 from the North Coordinates and 0.584 from the West Coordinates - This will be the coordinates to the final!
