Geocache Description:

This geo-cache is a geometric, multi-stage one, which takes the searcher round Lake Pupuke on Auckland's North Shore. You need to visit specific co-ordinates, record information, and then use trigonometry, plotting and navigating skills. It is not a 5-minute drive by so allow several hours. You most likely will have to visit more than once.

This cache starts by going to site A recording information and using it to proceed to site B, recording information to get to site C etc.

The twist is that all the sites are on the circumference of a circle centred in the middle of Lake Pupuke in Takapuna. You need to derive the circumcentre of this circle see M@'s Circumcentre 2 cache. Once you have this position you will need to plot the bearing (info found at position C) to get to position D which is the final cache site and which also lies on the circle mentioned above.

At the small scale involved it is quite possible to plot the positions on a map and avoid doing the mathematics but for anyone who has cracked M@'s circumcentre caches the maths will be no problem.

Note: The bearing available at site C is TRUE, not magnetic, (variation is currently 19 degrees 24 minutes East) so remember this. Also some of the reserves round the lake have their gates closed around dusk so do not get your car trapped.

To get started go to the listed position( S36 46.552 E174 45.770) and look for a, somewhat obscured,(not the obvious ones)plaque and record the year and the months mentioned.

Then subtract the LAST TWO digits of the year you recorded to correct the false decimal places in the following

Position B Latitude S 36 46.984 (e.g. .984 - 20 =.964) not the real figure

Then subtract the NUMBER of the SECOND month on the plaque from the decimal part of the following

Position B Longitude E 174 45 .574 (e.g. .574 - 10 =564) not the real figure

Now go to your corrected, position B and look for a clue, which will get you to position C Once you have the position C you will have the information to derive the circumcentre position (the centre of the circle on which all the other positions lie) When you search around position C you will find a clue giving you the bearing from the circumcentre to the final cache position (D)

Note you do not need to physically visit the circumcentre position but you will need to plot it on a map and draw in the bearing to the final cache position D on that circle.

Some of the mathematicians may wish to do a reverse of the circumcentre calculations to find D but I personally, have not done so.

So grab your GPS, a map, a pair of compasses, some paper, sharpen your pencil and go to it!

The cache is a 1 litre camo-painted plastic barrel and when placed, contained:

A Pac-a-Mac poncho, A New Zealand Slang Dictionary form down Wairakei way, A spring link snap hook, A tube of Superglue, A Kokopu Connection fridge magnet,

Acknowledgements: My thanks to all those from who I have filched ideas and incorporated into this cache, but especially, M@ (Tofska), Evil C, The Hairy Little Dwarf and Klaymen.

I had been planning the circle setup for some time but you can blame M@ for inspiring the circumcentre part!

Some people may have flashbacks when they visit here, for Lake Pupuke was the setting for Maurice Gee's story, "Under the Mountain", which was the basis of the childrens TV show of the same name in 1982. Keep one eye behind you for the evil slug, Mr Wilberforce.
