Geocache Description:

Hike/Bike in on the rail trail, or hike in from Ruonala Rd

This cache is located off the southern end of the Granite Town Rail Trail. This trail is a three mile long segment of an abandoned railroad bed in Milford NH. A description of the trail can be found at:
(visit link)

A map of the trail is found at:
(visit link)

There are two ways to get to the cache. The recommended way is to start at the beginning (northern-end) of the rail trail at the rear of the Department of Public Works building on Route 13 about 0.7 miles south of the Milford Oval on Route 13. The trail is a bit less than three miles to the Cache, so this is a five to six mile round trip. You can walk, ride a mountain bike, or cross country ski on the trail. You will travel along Great Brook where wildlife can frequently be seen. Be prepared for mosquitos in season. There is private property along the trail, so please stay on the trail. The trail follows an abandoned railroad bed for most of the way, and goes up a wooded hill for part of the way.

The alternate way to get to the cache is to park near the southern end of the trail and walk in. This is probably too steep to ride a bike or cross country ski. There is a parking area under some power lines on Ruonala Rd, just off Route 13 near the Brookline/Milford town line. The parking area is not plowed in the winter, so you will need to park up or down Ruonala Rd a ways and then come back to the power lines. The coordinates of the parking area are:
N 42.47.584
W 071.39.485
Park off the road, travel down the power lines to the bottom of the hill, and take a right on the rail trail. This route is much shorter than doing the whole rail trail, and can be used if you want to do it quicker.

My son's cub scout den made some wood duck bird houses, and these were placed in the swampy areas that surround the cache site. You can sometimes see beavers and great blue herons in the area.

We put some small hand tools in the ammo case cache. If you have a hand tool that you don't use anymore, bring it along and swap it with something else. There are also some small toys and other items in there if you don't like tools.
