Geocache Description:

This cache is two feet from the east entrance of the Islington Tunnel.

Regent's Canal was constructed in the early 1800s to link the Grand Junction Canal's Paddington Arm with the River Thames at Limehouse Basin in the Docklands. This cache is near the east entrance of the Islington Tunnel, 3/4 mile long (878 m), which began use in 1820. Since it had no towpath, barges had to be "legged" through the entire length. Six years later, in 1826, a steam tug was introduced, which worked by pulling itself along a chain on the canal bed. The tug was in operation until the 1930s. Today, self-powered long boats traverse the tunnel, and only the narrow ones can pass in opposite directions while in the tunnel. The tunnel runs through Islington, passing under Upper Street, Liverpool Road, Tolpuddle Street, Maygood Street, and opens once again at Muriel Street. The route is marked with blue and bronze markers in the pavement along Chapel Market Street, as well as others nearby. This section of the canal, between Colebrook Row and Danbury Street, is locked after dark, so the cache is accessible only during daylight hours. It is quite busy then, so be aware of muggles as you pursue the cache. You are looking for a 35mm film container attached with magnets. The cache contains a log only, so bring a pen or pencil. After you locate the cache, please return it to the same location so that it is protected from the elements and hidden from the casual observer.
