Geocache Description:

The cache is a small ammo can and can be accessed from Chimney Rock Road at cords:39*10.188N and 110*42.246W.These tunnels were started by the Corps of Engineers in 1948 and later contracted out to the Morrison Knudsen Company. After four years of blasting and drilling, three hundred tons of dynamite was placed over and in the large tunnel and detonated,to test if they could withstand a nuclear blast. It did not survive so the project was abandoned. The Tunnel is approximately 727 feet long. Testing at this location consisted of 4 explosive charges of 40,000 pounds of TNT, one of 320,000 pounds, buried 12.5 feet deep. All blast sites are visible. Three penetrated into the tunnel. One hole was caused by the seismic ativity of the 4 explosive charges. One of the perpendicular tunnels is approximately 299 feet long and 6 feet high. There are test sites approximately 600 to 1,000 feet north west of the end of the tunnel where 2 inch drill holes were filled with 320 pounds of TNT and detonated. The tunnels were to store large amounts of munitions and a town was planned in the area for the support of the government employees.
