Geocache Description:

Colonial Era House of Easter Carter - "The Angel of Dogtown"

Easter Carter was known as the "Angel of Dogtown". She was poor spinster, devout in her faith, softspoken, selfless, gentle, quite, and generous in all things. This address had the first and only two story house in Downtown, the extra space being used to help her neighbors, and to provide her neighboors a place to gather and get fed in the cold winter months (when some of them had no heat or food). Her house is remembered for its pegged clapboards which provided for a rugged and attractive well-built house.Easter nursed the citizens of dogtown, bought or made their medicine, fed them, and spent her entire life finding things she could do the help others in her community. She took in orphans, taught school in her house, cared for anyone, or anything that looked to her for help. When many people would be on their death-bed they would call for Easter Carter to be with them as she provided comfort and genuine love of her neighbors and other to those she was comforting. On her own she raised cattle, sheep, and teams of oxen. She also planted and raised potatos, onions, cabbage, and other vegetables. The blueberries that still grow in her fields are some of the finest in the world. When she would hear people passing by she would always offer them food, and was known to lay out huge picnics on her propery just to make sure her neighbors were getting enough to eat.She shared her home with "Old Ruth", who was a freed mulatto slave with a similar hearty, compassionate manner, and profound love of God. Ruth also went by the name of "John Woodman" and was often known to wear male clothing. She was very well known as a hard worker, and she earned a decent living building the stone walls of he communitee. The house at this location is very poular for picnics, tippling, and for prayer meetings. Local modern day seminary students often visit this site to pray to be just like Easter Carter, and to share Gods love the way that Easter did.If you visiting this site please leave relegious icons, articles, prayer cards, and so on. If you pray at this site for humility, gentleness, compassion, and kindness your pray will be answered. On a more curious note... there are Rocks and boulders on her land that do not belong to the local geology, but are in fact native to the Midle East. More specifically the stones are from Nazareth and Jerusaluem and were imported to Gloucester along with several tons of gravel and popples from Galiea by one of her neighbors as a gift.Cache container is large, and has a bunch of extra space for lots of goodies. The theme for this cache is things of an angelic nature, of profound love of your neighbors, and service to others. Place things in the cache along the lines of being of service, and feel free to leave old bibles, prayer cards, icons, greeting cards, statuates, relics, and so on. Small blankets, slippers, hats, bug spray, rain pouncho's and other items to make your fellow cachers comfortable when they come to visit. Please return the cache to it's hiding place before you leave, and hide it well so that the muggles don't trip over it.The cache is VERY well hidden, but it really is worth the search. As a tribute to Easter Carter please leave small cans of fruit (like what does into a childs lunch box). This is also a good cache for kids to visit as there are trinkets and goodies in the cache that the kids will love, AND it gives the parents a chance to talk to the kids about charity, sacrifice, and helping others by using Easter Carter as a model. There is a secondary part of this cache, with the coordinated for the next being written in the inside cover of the log book.It should be mentioned that this cache is hidden at the site of Easters FIRST house on the North side of the road, with the cache near the original house. Some year later Easter built a second house on the South side of the road and turned it into a bit of a "road house" promoting dancing and other frivolity for the local youths. The large field across the road from this location it the site for the second house. The house sat elevated above the road, had wonderful gardens, plenty of space for live stock. The ruins of this second house is quite large, and is typical of a very, very large house with a full cellar.Behind the "road house" is an excellent location for a picnic.
